25 August 2010 - 18th Ambassador's Conference - Speech by Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic. "Mr. Prime Minister, Mr. President of the Senate, Mr. President of the National Assembly, Mr. Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Ministers, Parliamentarians, Ambassadors, There are moments in history when fate wavers between the best and the worst possible outcome. This is the case for the international community’s actions in the crescent of crisis that stretches from the borders of Pakistan to the far reaches of the Sahel, encompassing Iran and the Middle East. It is the case in Europe, where the Treaty of Lisbon and the decisions taken to deal with the financial crisis are opening up prospects still to be developed if we are to make the European Union a global player.

It is also the case for the global economy, which has not yet resumed the path of solid and sustainable growth, while the G20 must prove that it has the determination to pursue the necessary reforms. At the big table where the decisions are made, new actors have joined the recognized powers. September, when Mrs. 14 January 2009 - Debate on the Protection of Civilians at the Security Council - Speech by Ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert, France's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Mr. Deputy Secretary-General, Dear Colleagues, First of all, Mr. Deputy Secretary-General, I want to hail your ongoing commitment, and that of your teams on the ground, to protecting civilians in armed conflicts, and I would also like to thank you for your introduction to our debate. France naturally subscribes to the speech that the representative of the Czech Republic will deliver shortly on behalf of the European Union.

Our debate is taking place in a particular context that all have underscored. Generally speaking, the international community must ensure effective compliance with the rules of international law concerning the protection of civilians. The United Nations spares no effort in this regard, particularly in the framework of peacekeeping operations.

However, the mandate entrusted to peacekeeping operations, in cooperation with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, to protect civilians must translate into concrete action on the ground. Thank you./. After wrapping up a two-day visit to France, Zardari heads to London and in talks with the British prime minister this week will raise his claims that some elements in Pakistan back the Taliban, said a spokesman for the president. [HH] Relations with France. Visit to India – Interview given by Hervé Morin, Minister of Defence, to “Indian Defence Review”¹ New Delhi, 18 October 2010 Q. – Could you give a brief overview of Indo-French defence relations?

THE MINISTER – We have a long-standing military cooperation. When India desired to diversify its military relations in the early 1980s, France responded, and a relationship of trust was built, especially with the supply of Mirage 2000s. The Rafale is an exceptional aircraft, which meets the needs of the Indian Air Force particularly well. In 1998, India and France decided to raise their bilateral relation to a strategic level. Since the beginning of our strategic partnership, a high-level defence committee has been meeting every year and other agreements have strengthened our bilateral relations.

Q. – What are you expecting from the Presidential visit in December? THE MINISTER – Last year, India was the Chief Guest for our national day parade on the Champs Elysées in Paris. Q. – What are the most important projects under way with India? THE MINISTER – The Indo-French relation is one of trust. 20 August 2010 - General Assembly - Pakistan - Humanitarian situation resulting from floods - Statement by Mr. Nicolas de Rivi re, charg d'affaires a.i. of France to the United Nations. President, Mr. Secretary-General, Ladies and Gentlemen, Pakistan has been suffering from the worst natural disaster in its history for nearly three weeks now. I want to express once again France’s solidarity with the Pakistani authorities and people, as well as our most heartfelt support for the victims and their families. Faced with a catastrophe on such a scale, the international community must mobilize its efforts quickly and extensively, alongside the Pakistani State, in order to help the populations.

The United Nations must remain central to the international community’s efforts. In addition, I want to reiterate that the principles of neutrality, impartiality and independence of humanitarian aid are key to its success. 15 August 2010 – Pakistan - French emergency aid – Communiqu issued by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
