Haiti Crisis Update Education Needs, IASC Education Cluster Response and Relevant Tools INEE (Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergenices) has responded quickly to this disaster: The strongest earthquake in Haiti in more than 200 years, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, rocked the nation on 12 January at 4.53 p.m.

Haiti Crisis Update – education needs and rapid response

(local time). The earthquake struck Ouest Province (population 2.2 million), with the epicentre some 17km south-west of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. Impact on Education A full scale rapid assessment of the impact of the earthquake on education in Haiti is yet to be done (see below), but reports from the country’s Education Minister Joel Jean-Pierre state that half of Haiti’s 15,000 primary schools and and half of the 1,500 secondary schools and its three main universities have been destroyed or badly damaged by the earthquake. “Education is at the core of Haiti’s recovery and is the key to Haiti’s development.” Relevant Tools and Resources Like this: Like Loading... US officials did not explain the reason for the order, but said that all journalists living in the camp on the territory of the airport would have to leave before 8 a.m. January 21. In the meantime, Russian rescue teams faced serious problems with the delivery of humanitarian cargoes from Russia to Haiti. An Il-76 cargo plane has not been able to fly from Venezuela to Haiti for more than 24 hours already because US authorities had not issued the permission for the flight. US flight control officers claimed that the flight of the Russian aircraft had been repeatedly delayed because the international airport of port-au-Prince was very busy. Haitian relief effort needs strong international coordination, stress UN officials. 18 January 2010 – United Nations officials have stressed the need for a strongly coordinated effort to bring vital assistance to the roughly 3 million people affected by last week’s earthquake in Haiti, amid the devastated infrastructure and logistical challenges in the wake of the disaster.

Haitian relief effort needs strong international coordination, stress UN officials

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who travelled to the quake-struck capital of Port-au-Prince yesterday, stressed the need to unplug any bottlenecks in the aid operation to ensure that the relief reaches people in need as quickly as possible. “Help has been arriving. More is coming in. But for those who have lost everything, I know that aid cannot come soon enough,” he told reporters at UN Headquarters in New York today, adding that the most important challenge is coordination of the relief effort. “This disaster ranks among the most devastating and logistically challenging in recent history,” Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), said today. UN Urges Haiti Coordination as Supplies Flood Airport (Update1) ISDR: Platform for the Promotion of Early Warning.

Why the policy arena is important Early warning is still too often seen in terms of hazard forecasting, and is not fully recognised as an essential element of vulnerability reduction, poverty reduction and sustainable development agendas.

ISDR: Platform for the Promotion of Early Warning

An important activity for the platform will be to promote the role of early warning in key development forums, particularly in UN General Assembly reporting, in the small island developing states (SIDS) debate, in international water related initiatives, and in climate change adaptation policy. The Third International Conference on Early Warning The conference was hosted by German Government with the slogan “From concept to action”. It was structured in an innovative way which combines the practical demonstration of proposed early warning projects around the world with discussions and debates of key policy issues. During the Priorities and Projects Forum, good practices in early warning were presented and discussed.

The Economic and Social Council, in its resolution 1999/4 of 7 May 1999, created an Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti, which undertook an assessment mission to Haiti in 1999, and was active during a short period of three months.

Economic and Social Council

The role of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group was to make recommendations on how to ensure that international assistance to Haiti was adequate, coherent, well coordinated and effective. From 2000-2004, annual reports of the Secretary-General on the “Long- Term Programme of Support for Haiti” were submitted to the Economic and Social Council.

In its decision 2004/322 of 11 November 2004, the Economic and Social Council decided to reactivate the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti. Press Conference on Haiti’s Reconstruction, One Year after Earthquake. Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for the country told correspondents at Headquarters today that most humanitarian targets had been achieved while reconstruction should be accelerated, though that would necessarily be a long-term process.

“Speeding up the reconstruction process is absolutely the priority for 2011,” Nigel Fisher, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Haiti told correspondents via video teleconference from the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince. “But this is clearly a multiyear challenge,” he cautioned, noting that Haiti, before the seismic disaster, already had the lowest level of development indicators in the Western hemisphere, with less than half of school-age children receiving an education and 60 per cent of the population lacking access to clean water. 10 January 2011 – One year after a devastating earthquake struck Haiti, killing 220,000 people and making 1.5 million others homeless, the citizens of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere have achieved a lot with international aid but a much more needs to be done, a senior United Nations official said today. “Clearly, speeding up the reconstruction and recovery effort is the absolute priority for 2011,” UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Haiti Nigel Fisher told a news conference in New York two days before the 12 January anniversary of the disaster. “Obviously, things could have gone quicker but I think it is important to remember that reconstruction takes time.” But he added: “In retrospect I think we can say that by and large the initial response to the earthquake was a success.”

He noted that the emergency relief appeal had been funded to the tune of almost $1 billion, 72 per cent of requirements. Daccess-dds-ny.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/N10/583/74/PDF/N1058374.pdf?OpenElement.
