When we think of face painting, we usually think of clowns, county fairs and this turtle-loving zombie kid. We certainly tend not to respect it as an art: instead, it's considered a dabbling at best, the sort of medium best left to teenage girls raising money for charity during a parade by painting children’s faces. But as Russian make-up artist Valeriya Kutsan shows, there's nothing trivial about face painting.
The human countenance can be an unparalleled canvas, and accounting for its contours takes great skill. For proof, look no further than Kutsan's latest series, 2D Or Not 2D. Teamed up with photographer Alexander Khoklov and post-processing expert Veronica Ershova, Kutsan has used a breathtaking array of techniques to paint the faces of models to resemble the flat, two-dimensional works of famous 20th-century artists. But we cannot compare the typography of 100 years ago to that of today, with the arrival of so many new typefaces, new ways to create fonts as well as new ways to get our artwork out into the world. Even though the application of typography has evolved so much from a century ago until now, the most common use of typography continues to be for ads, store signs, and logos. Peter did a great job of differentiating the three identities a university typically has. – The academic and marketing identity (what most would think of as the main identity). – The athletics or mascot identity. Not designed by Peter and very clearly just for and controlled by the athletics department. It is one of the better animal identities because it is not growling or waving a fist or too cartoonish. UConn has a pretty simple color palette but, many academic systems also include extra Pantone colors to be used for marketing or just for the presidential or university seal (gold, etc.). I’ve never been much of an artist, though I did, early in my career, have several opportunities to do some basic black and white photo retouching — mostly taking out a background, fixing a flaw or trying to tone down glare from reflected light.
These tasks were done back then not on the computer, but with a set of special photo-retouch paints and a variety of fine brushes. Sometimes in a pinch we’d use a black Sharpie or a soft pencil. In those days you did whatever was necessary to achieve your final result, regardless of how bad it looked on the original. Fortunately, reproduction quality wasn’t what it is today and you could cover up a host of flaws when making a halftone in the process camera.

I was a stop-motion character animator at Skellington Productions for THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS in the early nineties. Whenever possible, I took the initiative to photograph the amazing setups in 3D. I photographed them with my Nikon stereo rig on Kodachrome slide film. The stereo pairs were digitally scanned and transformed to anaglyph format for this presentation.
They are a testament to the outstanding artistry of the crew of Skellington Productions. These anaglyph photos require either red/blue or red/cyan 3D glasses to see the stereoscopic effect.
