Siemens PLM Software Blog. Solid Edge. Excellence in design leads to real business returns Monday, April 14th, 2014 I have been reading some new research from Motiv Strategies and the Design Management Institute that looks at the characteristics and performance of ”design-centric” companies. The conclusion of this research is that the stock market return from investing in companies where design is at the center of their business model is 228% greater than that from investing in the market as a whole, my inference from this is that the underlying business performance of these companies has been significantly superior. Some of the criteria used to identify these organizations were that “deployment of design should be an integrated function across the entire enterprise” and that there should be a “tangible senior leadership-level commitment for design”.

Some of the corporations who met the criteria where Apple, Newell-Rubbermaid, Procter & Gamble, Steelcase, Whirlpool, and Nike. Monday, April 7th, 2014 Tuesday, March 11th, 2014 ). New Terms and New Ideas in CAD – Synchronous Technology. With all the changes in CAD that have been happening the last few years, there has been a struggle to come up with terms that properly describe and allow you to compare what comes from each CAD provider. Chad Jackson is making some attempts to discuss this on his blog posts which is leading to a lot of chatter on twitter. I’m all for getting some standardization if only so I don’t have to write a string of terms or definitions for my readers in every blog post I make.

The problem is a lot of the terms just don’t fit us. Or, if they do, they might not fit others. Below is on picture on Synchronous Technology that has been around since before it was released (3 versions ago). For people talking generally about CAD, lets talk about some terms that get confusing, especailly around Synchronous Technology. Traditional CAD programs, say SolidWorks, Pro/E, Inventor(not with Fusion) ,Solid Edge( V20 or earlier ), are sometimes refereed to as “Parametric Modelers”. Follow these topics: General.
