SMALLER CITIES

Concept The Cidade Campus will bring together activities, collaborations and knowledge from across the Programme for Guimarães, European Capital of Culture (ECOC) 2012, plus introduce a new set of interactions, presentations and interventions to collectively ‘re-imagine the possibility of the city’. Rebel Cities: From the Right to the City to the Urban Revolution by David Harvey – review.

New book by David Harvey: Rebel Cities. Between trying to take a day off and teaching overload (at the same time), I have been speed-reading David Harvey’s new book, Rebel Cities: from the right to the city to the urban revolution, bought on a day out in Bath.

New book by David Harvey: Rebel Cities

I know, this is the sort of book you are meant to buy at Booksmarks or somewhere like that, but Bath is the closest place to where I live with decent book shops (Oxford doesn’t count, because it doesn’t actually have great bookshops, apart from Blackwell’s, and the OUP bookshop, both of which are more like academic libraries where you can buy the books, if you see what I mean).

The Price of Walkability

Not so long ago, walkable neighbourhoods had a price penalty associated with them – not a price premium. However, a structural shift is occurring, which demonstrates a fundamental change in demand in our cities. Sofia Dias. Urban Times - Optimistic Forward-Thinking Online Magazine. Can crowdsourcing save the city? TED is currently in full swing, and the program this year has an entire section devoted to the city.

Can crowdsourcing save the city?

Fitting, given that this year’s TED Prize went to a city-centric project, one that hopes to crowdsource ideas to solve urban problems and reinvent cities. FUTUREPLACES #011. Gigi Roggero: The Power of Living Knowledge. Eipcp.net. Transform.eipcp.net. The Pace of Pedestrian Flows in Cities. D.

The graph below, via urban planner Dan Taylor, attempts to chart the biggest shifts in North American job trends over the past 100 years, highlighting the previous shift from an agrarian to an industrial economy during the 20th century, and from an industrial to what he's calling the Creative Age today.

The Great Jobs Shift - Jobs & Economy

The graph, by Carrie Taylor, is based on data put together my colleague Kevin Stolarick of the Martin Prosperity Institute and includes data for the United States and Canada. The purple bars show the percent of the workforce employed in an era's major industry during its peak. The blue bars show that industry's same job share in 2012. The chart shows that in 1900, 60 percent of the workforce held agrarian jobs. In 2012, only one percent held similar positions. Why People in Cities Walk Fast - Jobs & Economy. Late last week our own Richard Florida wondered on Twitter whether pedestrian walking speeds might indicate a city's economic activity — reflecting some sort of "urban metabolism," as he put it.

Why People in Cities Walk Fast - Jobs & Economy

Turns out there's a rather long history of research into the speed of walking in cities, and that the evidence reveals, among other things, a strong connection between fleetness of foot and fatness of wallet. Call it a sign of the Cantering Class. Most work on urban walking speed dates back to 1976, when psychologists Marc and Helen Bornstein published a provocative paper on the topic in the top-tier journal Nature. The Bornsteins wanted to understand the relationship between a growing human population and an individual person's behavior.

So they planted themselves in major activity centers of 15 different cities and towns in six different countries on warm sunny days, and timed how fast a couple dozen solitary, unsuspecting pedestrians covered about 50 feet of space.
