Pro Tip: Use Leading Lines to Enhance Your Portraits. Anybody who has ever tried to capture a great portrait knows just how important composition is. The rule of thirds, golden spiral, leading lines and more are not just important for landscapes — these rules can take your portraits to the next level as well. And that’s exactly what the good people at Weekly Imogen demonstrate in the short and simple (but extremely useful) tutorial below on using leading lines to enhance your portrait photography. Whether it’s train platforms, a beautiful wall, a well-placed corner, or even carefully arranged arms and/or legs, leading lines can ensure your viewer’s eye is naturally guided towards your subject.

Just search for portrait on 500px and you’ll see this technique in use all over the place. Here are just a few great photos we found that use leading lines in one way or another to help make the photo more pleasing and easier to digest: This is just scratching the surface. Pricing and Availability. Things That Awe Me. Minimalism: Using Negative Space In Your Photographs. A Post By: James Brandon Sometimes it’s nice and refreshing to just strip a photo or scene down to it’s absolute bare essentials.

Often times, I get too caught up in trying to fill every part of the frame with something interesting. The problem is, sometimes when we try to fill up the entire frame with objects, lines, people, shapes, etc, we actually overcomplicate things and leave the viewer wanting a place to rest their eyes. The trick/secret is this: Negative space can be just as interesting in a photograph as anything else, if done right. I encourage you to consider this the next time you go out shooting. Image by Brian Matiash In the above image, Brian Matiash actually set out to create a series of minimalistic, black and white images around Staten Island. Things That Awe Me. Getty Images Sports Photographer Robert Cianflone Reporting from Sochi… In the picture above, taken on January 30th 2014, you see more than 315,000 Euro worth of Canon camera gear or 425,659.59 US dollars! That’s the value of a house and more than a Lamborghini Aventador!!! Now pick up your jaw, put it back into place, wipe away the drool and read about how the pictured gear wasn’t even around seven years ago. When IOC President Jacques Rogge announced in July 2007 that Sochi was named as the host city of the 2014 Winter Games, the Getty Images global operations team went into full swing to begin preparations.

Even though the actual event only runs for 16 days, years of planning are required to bring an event together so it runs seamlessly for all those involved. At this point the venues that will host the games haven’t even been built! The team has to find out as much information as possible in advance. Where are the venues? So what’s changed about the gear you see now to how it was seven years ago? Back then we had the MkIIN cameras with a crop sensor. The Bastards Book of Photography by Dan Nguyen. From Paris with Love. Adobe Expands DNG Specification to Include Lossy Compression. Adobe has officially added lossy compression into the latest specification (1.4) for its Digital Negative (DNG) RAW file format. The new Lossy DNG, which first appeared as a feature in Lightroom 4 earlier this year, gives photographers a middle-ground between the quality of lossless DNG photos and the small file size of JPEG photos. DNG is an open RAW format competing against the proprietary RAW formats used by most major camera brands. Only a small number of manufacturers have baked DNG support into their cameras so far — Leica and Pentax are two of the big ones — but supporters of the format believe that having an open format is the way to go for storing digital photos safely long term. The US Library of Congress has even recommended the format as a more suitable for preserving digital images for the long haul, since it’s unknown whether software in the future will still be able to read the proprietary RAW formats used today.

RAW files are huge, and JPEGs are small. P.S. Lightroom 4.2 Now Available « Lightroom Journal. DSLR Camera Focusing Tips for Beginners. Oldtimer Calendar on Photography Served. Tintypes on the Behance Network. I have a tintype portrait studio called Photobooth, on Valencia Street in San Francisco. Over the past year, I've had about 3500 people come through the door, sit in front of the camera and have their portrait made.

Some of them came looking for me and some just wandered in and asked what we were doing there. Either way, I do not choose who I photograph, and I like the exercise of being constantly confronted with new people and having to figure out what I find interesting about them. I prepare each tintype plate by hand and make a single exposure of each person (occasionally two, if I make a mistake). The tintype is processed immediately so the subject can walk out the door with it about 15 minutes later. There's a short video at the bottom of this page (made by the good folks at Cool Hunting), that shows our shop and explains how the process works.

Henri Cartier-Bresson '50s The French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 – 2004) was influential in ways and on a scale that, in all likelihood, will never be repeated or matched by any other practitioner of the craft.

So much of what the world now knows and recognizes as photojournalism, after all, was originally shaped by Cartier-Bresson’s work in the 1930s, and especially by the methodology he developed and pursued with his peers Robert Capa and David Seymour, or “Chim”: incessant travel, always with camera in hand; the search not for mere adventure, but for meaning in both conflict and in utterly quotidian calm; and finally, the hunt for specific, never-to-be repeated scenes, instances, gestures that would, in less than a heartbeat, tell a tale that no moving image or written word could possibly surpass.

We've just received an updated Fujifilm X10 featuring the revised, orb-resistant sensor, announced in March. We've rushed it straight into our studio to see how it performed, alongside the existing X10 we had been putting through our review process. We'll be doing more in-depth testing, to check whether the changes Fujifilm have made have had any other impact on image quality but, given the interest surrounding the issue, we thought we'd show our preliminary results.

(Updated with image quality comparison) Jump to: 'White Orb' test Here we've used a directed light source to show the large white discs, or orbs, that the X10 (and X-S1) would show when bright light overwhelmed the sensor. Orb test using existing X10: Orb test using revised X10 with modified sensor: Image quality comparison Here, to check whether the sensor modification has had any other impact on image quality, we've shot the same still-life scene with both the original and modified X10.

Official Canon “CanonSGLens” iOS App. Hipstamatic Introduces "World's First Social Camera" iPhone photo app maker Synthetic thinks it has found a way to combine the suspense of analog film with digital convenience through the new Hipstamatic D-Series app for iOS it's releasing on Thursday.

The D-Series — billed as a "disposable camera for iOS" — allows groups of iPhone-toting friends to share a batch of 24 shots. Friends invite one another through Facebook to shoot to a specific roll. As everyone shoots their own photos — from the same party, same town, or anywhere wirelessly connected — the amount of shots left decreases, just like an old-school roll of analog film. Also like analog film, no one can see what's being shot while the D-Series roll is in progress. But once the final shot is used, all the participating friends are delivered the entire batch of 24 photos, arranged chronologically and with labels saying who shot what. Users are then free to share those individual images with whomever they please. What do you think?

I don’t often get questions about how to apply keywords to photos, but I do hear from people who are struggling to regain a bit of order over an unruly keyword list, so it is to them that I devote this column. Unfortunately, there is no magic wand to wave and automatically fix a disorganized keyword list, you’ll need to roll up your sleeves, put the kettle on, and just get down to business.
