Shelter is searching for an illustrator, artist, or designer to provide the final playing card in an all-star deck that includes cards designed by Damien Hirst, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, and more. The housing charity has invited 52 of the UK's top artists to design a playing card, for an exhibition that forms part of its House of Cards campaign. The campaign highlights the fragility of many UK households' housing situation by depicting a collapsing house of cards.

There are some mothers who prefer their kids to grow up at their own pace rather than pushing them too much. They want things “just right” for their kids, no more and no less. Of course, as mothers, they also want to feel amazed and moved by their kids' achievement.

Digital Foundations

xtine burrough and I just published Digital Foundations: an Intro to Media Design with the Adobe Creative Suite with AIGA Design Press/New Riders under a CC license (a first for the publisher.) The book teaches the formal principles and exercises of the Bauhaus through lessons in the Adobe Creative Suite. There are a whole spate of reasons why we wrote this book, but the focus of this post is on how we were able to negotiate the Creative Commons license from New Riders, which is owned by Peachpit, which is owned by Pearson (a big big corporate big thing.) 1. Figure out what you want and ask for it
The Internet is a treasure trove of photographic imagery. Artists and designers often combine media elements from this visual archive in inventive ways, or use downloaded images as research for their own creative work. While we admittedly live in a copy/paste culture, using a downloaded image from the web has legal ramifications. Just because you can download an image doesn’t mean you may use it! A downloaded image may be protected by copyright laws. Copyright is a legal tool for preserving control over the use of a creative work.
