Correlation & Regression. Core Research & Stats Vocabulary. Reading Research. CHECKLIST FOR EVALUATING RESEARCH. Literature Review & Evaluation. Reading and Analyzing Research Papers. Objective: Read a research paper and identify its contributions and limitations. Summarize the paper's contributions and limitations clearly, succinctly, and articulately. You can return to the review later and quickly refresh your memory about what the paper was about. Reading: What to Look For While reading a research paper, look for (and mark) the following key things: problem they're solving (how large is the problem? How important is the problem?) Their approach to solving the problem and the benefits to their approach how they evaluated their approach and the results the limitations to their approach related work their conclusions In addition, think about any limitations you see to their approach.

After reading the paper, you'll summarize your findings in a review. Review Content Your review should contain the following information. Statement of the Problem/Goals In one sentence in your own words, state succinctly the overall problem being addressed in this paper. Technical Approach. Carl Jung. Existential Intelligence. Learning theories. Isolation and Connectedness – Existential Therapy. Illuminati by Rich Bargdill An important point of convergence with humanistic and relational models occurs within this domain. This is also one of the places of where existential thought gets greatly misperceived. Many times I have heard people accuse existentialism of being individualistic or “all about the individual.” This is a fair criticism of many existential thinkers across time, particularly some of the philosophers. The Influence of Carl Rogers Carl Rogers (1951; 1965; 1980) is the founder of client-centered (or person-centered) therapy. Try this exercise which I often use in classes I teach. Rogers’s is most well known for his therapeutic triad: empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard. Empathy is a very challenging process. Unconditional positive regard is not a mere tolerance for the person of the client and their behaviors.

Finally, there is genuineness. Genuineness is not only feeling these experiences, but also, when appropriate sharing them. Skills vs.

Positive Psychology. What Is Shadow Work? | HealDove. An Overview Shadow work has been around for eons and has been used by indigenous cultures around the world. It was made more popular in the west by Carl Jung. According to Jung, our shadows can be said to consist of energy patterns, known as selves or sub-personalities, that were disowned — pushed down into our unconscious in childhood — as part of our coping strategies. Shadow work attempts to get a client in touch with aspects of him/herself that are responsible for creating chaos, dysfunction, pain, etc., in the life of the client.

There are a myriad of ways to go about doing this; the particular method I use is a visual and feeling method. It is loosely based on the process of Internal Family Systems (IFS). The process itself is very gentle and comforting. During this journey, I use a similar style as the Socratic method in my coaching in the sense that I ask probing questions to help you unlock your mind to your own inner wisdom. The Various Selves/Subpersonalities The Protector. Choosing a psychotherapist: Activity and handout. For my Intro Psych course, I spend a lot of time thinking about what the future medical professionals, engineers, business leaders, and politicians taking my classes need to know about psychology.

In the disorders chapter, I ask students to raise their hands if they, a friend, or a family member has been diagnosed with a psychological disorder. About 2/3 of the hands go up. My students or someone they know could benefit from seeing a psychotherapist. Intro Psych textbooks include information about what psychotherapy is, but how often do they cover how to find a psychotherapist? The American Psychological Association (APA) provides a “how to choose a psychologist” page, a page that “may be reproduced and distributed for noncommercial purposes with credit given to the American Psychological Association.” If time allows, this topic lends itself to a jigsaw classroom.

Final PSYC 1300 Detailed Study Guide with notes updated. THE BRAIN FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. Try It Yourself. Joan Didion Answers the Proust Questionnaire. By Maria Popova In the 1880s, long before he claimed his status as one of the greatest authors of all time, teenage Marcel Proust (July 10, 1871–November 18, 1922) filled out an English-language questionnaire given to him by his friend Antoinette, the daughter of France’s then-president, as part of her “confession album” — a Victorian version of today’s popular personality tests, designed to reveal the answerer’s tastes, aspirations, and sensibility in a series of simple questions.

Proust’s original manuscript, titled “by Marcel Proust himself,” wasn’t discovered until 1924, two years after his death. Decades later, the French television host Bernard Pivot, whose work inspired James Lipton’s Inside the Actor’s Studio, saw in the questionnaire an excellent lubricant for his interviews and began administering it to his guests in the 1970s and 1980s. Patient TN was, by his own account, completely blind. Two consecutive strokes had destroyed the visual cortex of his brain, and consequently, his ability to see. It is not uncommon for stroke patients to suffer brain damage, but the case of TN — referenced by his initials, the general practice in such studies — was peculiar. His first stroke had injured only one hemisphere of his visual cortex. About five weeks later, a second stroke damaged the other hemisphere. Known as selective bilateral occipital damage, TN’s unusual injury made him the subject of much interest while recovering at a hospital in Geneva.

To further test the extent of TN’s abilities, researchers from Tilburg University in the Netherlands devised a simple yet decisive experiment: an obstacle course. TN’s rare condition is known as blindsight. The researchers explained that TN’s success indicates that “humans can sustain sophisticated visuo-spacial skills in the absence of perceptual awareness.” The Fear of Hurting the Other and the Inhibition of Self. Click here to contact Beverly and/or see her GoodTherapy.org Profile Even when it is unintended, some people find it intolerable to hurt someone they love.

To experience hurting the other can create shame, guilt and strong “I am a bad person” feelings. As a result, we may avoid saying what is on our mind and put aside our own feelings and needs. This inhibiting of the self can be harmful to our relationships and can create the conditions for developing anxiety and depression. Marlene, a 27 year old married woman, came into my therapy office feeling anxious and depressed.

She described how unhappy she was in her marriage to Ben. She told me she loved her husband but was feeling like she was in a straight jacket. What Marlene described to me suggested that she had issues she needed to work on as an individual and that as we did this she would be more able to address the difficulties in her relationship with Ben. Marlene considered my ideas with some skepticism. Find the Right Therapist. Character and Personality. What It Feels Like to Be Suicidal. Interesting piece on suicidal ideation in Scientific American. Scientific American: In considering people’s motivations for killing themselves, it is essential to recognize that most suicides are driven by a flash flood of strong emotions, not rational, philosophical thoughts in which the pros and cons are evaluated critically.

And, as I mentioned in last week’s column on the evolutionary biology of suicide, from a psychological science perspective, I don’t think any scholar ever captured the suicidal mind better than Florida State University psychologist Roy Baumeister in his 1990 Psychological Review article , “Suicide as Escape from the Self.” To reiterate, I see Baumeister’s cognitive rubric as the engine of emotions driving deCatanzaro’s biologically adaptive suicidal decision-making. There are certainly more recent theoretical models of suicide than Baumeister’s, but none in my opinion are an improvement. Keep reading. 8Share 225Share. Psych 11. Scientific Method. Many studies and much research has been invested into the how and why behind our everyday actions and interactions. The results are revealing. If you are looking for a way to supercharge your personal development, understanding the psychology behind our actions is an essential first step. Fortunately, knowing is half the battle.

When you realize all the many ways in which our minds create perceptions, weigh decisions, and subconsciously operate, you can see the psychological advantages start to take shape. It’s like a backstage pass to the way we work, and being backstage, you have an even greater understanding of what it takes to succeed. The following 6 psychology facts can be viewed as a hacker’s guide to self-improvement, based on the brain’s default settings. A lowering of attention or consciousness. C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles: What is Sandplay Therapy? “Often the hands know how to solve a riddle with which the intellect has wrestled in vain.”C. G. Jung Sandplay is hands on psychological work.

It is a powerful therapeutic technique that facilitates the psyche’s natural capacity for healing. In a “free and protected” space provided by the analyst, a client creates a concrete manifestation of his or her imaginal world using sand, water, and miniature objects. In this way Sandplay helps honor and illuminate the client’s internal symbolic world and provides a place for its expression within a safe container, the tray filled with sand. Sandplay is done adjunctively to talk therapy during the process of the therapeutic work. Through the tangible emergence of personal and archetypal symbols, Sandplay has the possibility of leading the client into layers of experience that are often pre-verbal and long forgotten to the conscious mind.

In Sandplay a scene is made from figures and objects placed in a box of sand. Harriet S. Kalff, D. (1980). Intro to Psychology. Shame. Shame: Spiritual Suicide. We live in a society that is terrified of feelings. In the addictive system that characterizes our culture, feelings are avoided through the institutionalization of shame and the use of the addictive process. Both are diversions. Both are taught and supported by external forces. Each feeds upon and reinforces the other. Acceptance of shame as a useful technique is based upon the acceptance of systemic addiction in our society. This is what one woman, who came to see me initially about anxiety attacks, had to say about the way she experienced shame: "When I experience shame I feel as though I am looking at the world through shattered glass. Many of the people I have worked with during the past 20 years were plagued with shame. The Two Major Flaws in Traditional Approaches to Shame In reviewing what others have written about shame, I came upon the work of Helen Lynd, whose book,Shame and the Search for Identity, was published in 1958. 1. 2.

SIGMUND FREUD - THE FATHER OF PSYCHOANALYSIS - NOVA - Discovery History Psychology (documentary) Psychology Schools of Thought - Major Schools of Psychology. When psychology was first established as a science separate from biology and philosophy, the debate over how to describe and explain the human mind and behavior began. The different schools of psychology represent the major theories within psychology.

The first school of thought, structuralism, was advocated by the founder of the first psychology lab, Wilhelm Wundt. Almost immediately, other theories began to emerge and vie for dominance in psychology. In the past, psychologists often identified themselves exclusively with one single school of thought. Today, most psychologists have an eclectic outlook on psychology. The following are some of the major schools of thought that have influenced our knowledge and understanding of psychology: Structuralism and Functionalism Structuralism is generally thought of as the first school of thought in psychology.
