This might be an easier way to learn and teach this tangle, “one cell at a time”. Frame it! Start the grid. Hint: Draw the grid at an angle to any of its sides, it looks natural, and you don’t have to worry about lining things up. Draw the crossing lines for the grid. Find a square in the middle, and put a dot right in the middle of the square Connect the dot to the middle of one of the edges of the square. Now connect that dot to an adjacent edge of the square, again, at the center of the edge. Now fill in that quarter of the square Now connect that center dot to the top corner of the square. Now give it lots of company! Shade in one of the “walls” of each cell, being consistent as to which side is shaded Now a little frame as a finishing touch! LeeAnn's Zentangle-ing Fun - Home. Not all of the tangles created and introduced by Zentangle® originators Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas are posted online. This makes complete sense when you think about it because income from teaching about Zentangle is one aspect of their business. Learning about the original “102 Tangles” (now up to 154) and receiving instructions on how to teach them is part of the teacher certification seminar. (See this page for more about teaching Zentangle.) For those who are new to Zentangle, the Zentangle-original (aka “official”) tangles are those created and introduced by Zentangle HQ — that is to say patterns by Maria Thomas, Rick Roberts and Maria’s daughters Molly Hollibaugh “(pronounced: haul’-a’-baw’)” and Martha Huggins. However, every Zentangle-original tangle that does have authorized online drawing instructions is posted here on TanglePatterns and is linked in my list below. It is best to hear them tell their own story and read about them on their web site at www.zentangle.com. Here though, I would like to tell you my own personal impression when meeting the couple at the 2nd CZT workshop held in October 2009 at a wonderful mansion retreat in Whitinsville, Maryland (outside of Boston). The setting was rustic and beautiful - a perfect location to take in the world of Zentangles. The couple had put together a great workshop. Just meeting them and spending time listening to their take on life was wonderful. Zentangle - Zentangle. News from Zentangle. Earlier this year, we visited The Cloisters in New York City.

News from Zentangle

The Cloisters is a museum dedicated to housing 12th through 15th century art and architecture. It's a feast of patterns! One item there was a bench with a high backrest. Its top was finished with this beautiful pattern. A couple days ago, I was sorting through one of my stacks and came across this napkin sketch I did on our drive back home from the Cloisters. In the "Zentomology" of all things tangled, you'll notice that assunta is a close relative of cadent. Originally, I started with a grid of dots, but it required too much thinking to keep track of which dot was the pointy end and which the rounded end of each stroke.

Instead of dots, the next idea was to use short alternating lines like on this utility cover. This completely solved my need to think and plan. Hint #1 Make your straight lines short. Hint #2 Think of your short straight lines as a runway. Hint #3Rotate your tile however it's most comfortable for you.
