MACON was on maneuvers off the California coast (one zepp for each coast was the USN's plan) and turned too tightly causing a badly-executed repair in the lower fin's structure to come completely apart. The folks at the helm panicked, dumped too much ballast and caused the ship to zoom up to pressure height, whereupon the relief valves vented a shit-ton of helium (as intended to prevent the lift cells from bursting).
Now with insufficient lift, MACON's crew got to enjoy a leisurely plunge into the Pacific ocean. Fortunately, lessons learned from the loss of AKRON meant that only three sailors died but that was the last of the MACON and rigid airships in the USA.
