UN Statistics Division. New York, 1 June 2016 - The chair of the Statistical Commission, Ms. Wasmalia Bivar of Brazil, addressed the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on 1 June during its Coordination and Management Meeting. Ms. Bivar, who provided her briefing by videolink, informed the Council that the Statistical Commission at its last session in March had agreed “as a practical starting point” on a global indicator framework, which had been developed by the Inter-agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs). She also informed the Council of the recent work of the High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the plans for a first UN World Data Forum to be held in Capetown, South Africa, in January 2017.

The presentation (English, Spanish) was followed by a short Q&A session. #climatedata. US Data.gov. City-Data: Stats about US cities. Envisioning Development: What is Affordable Housing? Data.gov.uk. Friday, October 16th 2009 Over the last three days we’ve been working on a side project. A design exercise if you like. We’ve been thinking about the beta Data.gov.uk repository, and wanted to explore putting some of the information contained within into people’s hands in a form that is accessible, timely, and relevant. And perhaps unsurprisingly, we thought a good way to do that was with a newspaper.

So here it is, the Postcode Paper: It’s a prototype of a service for people moving into a new area. It gathers information about your area, such as local services, environmental information and crime statistics. It’s not just data from central government – we also scraped TFL for travel times, and ITO generated us a bespoke spider map of transport options in our area. And there’s stuff from the NHS and the council. We printed 50, and gave them out to a room full of civil servants, who seemed very excited its possibilities. I say consume because it’ more than reading, and more than viewing a picture, so one must consume or absorb the data given.

Some people aren’t doing infographics right and others are. Take a look at someone who’s doing it right: Our friends over at WeightLossDietWatch.com are doing it right by keeping it simple and informative. Some of the biggest problems I’ve seen with bad infographics are people that use way too much information and it feels like I’m doing homework when reading. The reality is most people are glancing at the graphic and absorbing information at a fast rate. I’m guessing people spend less than a minute on most infographics. At the end of the day most people looking at these will have a subjective view and always be biased. Karl Hartig: Data Visualization. Many Eyes. Visual Complexity. Information aesthetics.
