Strategies for Reading and Discussing Paired Books

Short, University of Arizona An exploration of strategies for pairing and reading books alongside each other was at the heart of my teaching in a recent global literature course. Once I realized the power of reading books within the context of other books, I brainstormed pairings that could be productive to explore and made stacks of books that I sorted and resorted to find different points of connections. I was intrigued by how my understandings of a book shifted when that book was juxtaposed with different books.

The significance of perspective quickly became clear—the most interesting pairings were ones where the two books offered distinctly different perspectives on a particular event, culture, theme, or issue. Reading two novels a week along with professional readings was a heavy load so we played with multiple ways of reading paired books. Last week, our skill was to compare and contrast two texts. In third grade, students are asked to compare and contrast the major points in two texts about the same topic. My two coworkers and I were searching for products to use, but we weren't finding anything that worked for us... Fast forward to the weekend. Students don’t necessarily have to find these sources, as we do with some research standards. The focus here is on analysis. Students are expected to analyze how those sources present information. This includes an analysis of the content, presentation, and word choices. This standard is about using a critical eye to examine more than one sources of information. The language of the standard details specific points of analysis for each grade level. Upper elementary students in grades fourth and fifth are also expected to consider multiple sources on the same topic.

As a teacher, you have several goals. To teach this standard you need sets of paired readings that explore the same topic or at least similar subject matter. Text-dependent questions do not ask students about their prior experience or feelings on a subject, but rather rely on explicit or implied information from the text.
