Benjamin Franklin took great interest in the promotion of spelling reform.

Benjamin Franklin's Phonetic Alphabet

While living in London in 1768 he wrote A Scheme for a new Alphabet and a Reformed Mode of Spelling in which he proposed a fairly accurate phonetic system for spelling English. The alphabet was published in 1779 in Franklin's Political, Miscellaneous, and Philosophical Pieces. His new phonetic alphabet consisted all the lowercase letters of the Latin alphabet, minus c, j, q, w, x, and y, which he thought redundant, plus six new letters for sounds which he thought lacked unambiguous orthographic representation. The other letters all adhered to the principle of one symbol (or unique digraph) per one sound. Franklin commissioned a type foundry to prepare a suitable type including for the 6 new letters, but soon lost interest in his alphabet.

Notable features Double vowels represent long vowel sounds, e.g. aa = [ a: ] and ii = [ i: ]. Franklin's Phonetic Alphabet Sample text. Silent Letters in English by Vivian Cook. Activities for ESL/EFL Students (English Study) Reviews: Levels of language. Levels of language 1) Phonetics, Phonology This is the level of sounds. One must distinguish here between the set of possible human sounds, which constitutes the area of phonetics proper, and the set of system sounds used in a given human language, which constitutes the area of phonology.

Phonology is concerned with classifying the sounds of language and with saying how the subset used in a particular language is utilised, for instance what distinctions in meaning can be made on the basis of what sounds. 2) Morphology This is the level of words and endings, to put it in simplified terms. It is what one normally understands by grammar (along with syntax). Lexicology is concerned with the study of the lexicon from a formal point of view and is thus closely linked to (derivational) morphology. 3) Syntax This is the level of sentences. 4) Semantics This is the area of meaning. 5) Pragmatics The concern here is with the use of language in specific situations.
