Romy Fraser bought the farm in 2008 with the aim of developing an education centre and community of small businesses that could work together to use the land's resources. We now have a number of thriving independent enterprises: -vegetable growing at Trill Farm Garden run by Ash and Kate -a beef & sheep enterprise run by Jake (Wessex Conservation Grazing) -The Old Dairy Kitchen run by Chris Onions, catering for our events and courses and teaching kitchen skills.

More recently, the ‘shed’ idea has been picked up by organisations like Age UK and Mensheds Australia as places where men can find company and improve their health and wellbeing. I’d like to suggest a different twist for London: the plotting shed. Not a place of escape, but one where citizens of all ages and backgrounds and irrespective of gender can meet to engage with the society around them and have their say on the issues of the moment.

Despite the wealth of resources and opportunities to express ourselves available through social media and online petitions, Londoners remain only peripherally involved in the decisions that affect them every day. The next Mayor needs to rectify the balance and provide visible and high-profile forums where ordinary citizens can put forward and develop ideas to improve the capital. Image via steve p 2008. In July 2011 we launched in Brixton, creating an online marketplace and community, providing advice and support to makers on setting up and developing a business, and running community events and workshops. It’s been a very exciting journey! We are thrilled to be starting Makerhood Norwood, covering makers in West Norwood, Streatham and Crystal Palace. The area already has such a strong creative community, and we look forward to supporting its growth, linking up with the Feast and other great local initiatives, and helping to start new ones.
