As a lifelong fan of visual effects pioneer Willis O'Brien, it was a treat to see the script versions, production illustrations, OBie's vfx solutions, and especially a selection of frames from the test reel that was produced of giant eagles with their riders fighting a ferocious allosaurus in a Lost Land... The research, enhanced by the national treasure known as Bob Burns, is well-presented and it makes for an enjoyable read.
There are, however, two things to be aware of. There is a paperback edition of this book that doesn't include the four color images, but only two of them, so be sure to get the hardbound. The color frame blow-ups are printed on the outside back cover in both editions, where they can be damaged during shipping/handling; I had scratches thru mine. Davidson This interesting 217 page book takes a very detailed look at the history of paleontological illustration (both vertebrates and invertebrates) and it includes numerous black and white copies of old dinosaur illustrations. The book also contains several color illustrations of prehistoric animals, but only one color illustration of a dinosaur, and it happens to be a modern illustration of a Deinonychus by Luis Rey.
The illustration is beautiful but extremely imaginative to the point of ridiculousness. The Deinonychus looks like a toothed turkey, complete with wattles! In one chapter the author presents an interesting discussion of today's paleoartists and the trend towards wrapping dinos in fantastical colors and spots. A Disney Sketchbook Book. "A Disney Sketchbook" by Ken Shue was meant to be published back in 2009 and it finally came out in late 2012.
Was the wait really worth it? The book is a fantastic collection of sketches from Disney artists throughout the years. The book does look amazing. The covering is a very nice leather effect hardback while the images have been printed on a heavy matte style paper. The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This book is actually published by two publishers, Chronicle Books and Titan Books. I've seen both and they are the same except the price which depends on the country you're in. Chronicle Books is also releasing a US$120 limited edition as well but it's cheaper on Amazon. It comes with a white slipcase with 8 prints in an envelope inside the back cover. The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is a pretty thick book at 272 pages. It covers art for the movie as well as the TV series. We have character designs, ship designs, storyboards, environment design, lighting studies, some film stills and plenty of beat boards (scenes featuring major story points). A great deal of illustrations are digitally painted, to a point I feel there's an overdose and makes traditional pieces stand out by contrast.
The pencil sketches and other non traditional medium pieces are delightful to look at because they are more organic and the style is a breath of fresh air compared to the digital paintings. Well guys, sorry I've been slacking on this feature of my blog. I went for two months without dedicating a paleo book to them. Have no fear, February of 2011 will not suffer the same fate. This month we will be looking at The Humongous Book of Dinosaurs. And let me tell you, does it deserve that title. At 1254 pages, it's one of the longest dinosaur books in my collection. The book follows an interesting format. Although the book is impressive for its time, it is now out of date, being published in 1997. DrBlack YANG. Vintage Dinosaur Art: The Reign of the Dinosaurs. This New Horizons title from 1992 caught my eye on eBay - I will confess - because the cover illustration is very, very strange.
That is one terrifying-looking tyrannosaur - bordering on surreal, actually. Expecting more weirdness inside, I snapped it up only to find that, in fact, it contains a great deal of stunning artwork. Why the publishers chose to stick such a bad piece on the cover (clearly by a jobbing illustrator - spot the Sibbick reference) given what's presented inside the book is anyone's guess. Alongside some well-worn art from the likes of Burian, Zallinger and Parker (pretty much all of which has been featured here before), this book features stunning work from, in particular, Mark Hallett and Eleanor Kish. The World of Kong. This is a very fascinating book.
If it was passed to someone who has never watched the movie, I would have no doubt that the person would believe that Skull island is real. This book is like a journal written by a discoverer — think Charles Darwin. The pages are filled with amazing paintings of dinosaurs, animals, creatures, insects and the habitat. And every one of the illustrated is documented. The level of detail and thought behind can be seen from the documentation. No where in the book was any reference made to the movie.
