Where are the best forums for text-based role playing? Well, I know there are some awesome responses to this question (the majority seeming to come from roleplaying friendlies such as Valucre and Coloholics, both of which I highly recommend), but as a fellow frequenter of Gaia who noticed a lack of engaging ideas and people who weren't as creative as particle board, I do wish to illustrate the major principle of why these are superior options to the bizarre community of Gaia.
Perhaps the largest issue with Gaia is that the entire project appears to be a performance for illiterate younglings who have read the first book they had in a few months and, inspired by their sudden literacy, believe themselves to be fully qualified to jump into such a powerful project. Gaia's interface seems less about Roleplaying and constantly reminds you with flashy doodads and sparkling exclamations of useless achievements just how pointless the entire project is.
