What Keeps NFC From Explosive Growth? A Gateway Product

It’s an extremely low-power radio signal that allows data to hop from a poster or sticker to a system like a smartphone. And it can enable all sorts of new user experiences that can connect the digital world to our analog environment. Imagine not just unlocking your car with a wave of your phone but having it launch Bluetooth, stream your favorite Pandora station, launch GPS, and text your spouse that you’re on your way home. This is the potential of NFC, not tomorrow but today. Instead, NFC is barely utilized in consumer electronics. “We demoed a charging mat, and some reporters thought NFC was sending power to the phone,” Kannyn Macrae, director of product management at Tylt, tells me. Tylt is an NFC hardware manufacturer.

THC/vonJeek proudly presents an ePassport emulator.

This emulator applet allows you to create a backup of your own passport chip(s). The government plans to use ePassports at Immigration and Border Control. The information is electronically read from the Passport and displayed to a Border Control Officer or used by an automated setup. THC has discovered weaknesses in the system to (by)pass the security checks. The detection of fake passport chips does not work. Thanks to Elv1s for beta testing! RFID Cooking with Mifare Classic. The Card Analyzers identify the card technology and determine the compatible RF IDeas reader. These card analyzers help users, solutions providers and hardware/software integrators quickly and accurately determine what card technology is currently in use. They report the correct RF IDeas reader part number, card size and ID in hexidecimal. Like RF IDeas’ pcProx Enroll readers, the card analyzers support more than 30 different card types and hundreds of millions of cards in use worldwide. The card analyzers check across all known cards supported and send the results as keystrokes to a text editor, such as, Microsoft Notepad. Card Analyzer – RF IDeas, Inc. Online Store. But we have come across an opportunity to audit the RFID system of an institution that has RFID to control the doors and public printers. Apparently the staff seemed to think that the RFID system was very secure and a few of the staff did not think so. So they asked permission to test the RFID system. I was lucky to know one of the staff that was involved. So a co-worker Tuomas and myself were able to get in on this auditing as a sort of project, something we could put in our portfolios. As of now we have barely started, so I will be updating this post.

We started out by trying to figure out which type of communication was used by the readers. We purchased a 13.56 MHz RFID reader writer from Robomaa here in Finland.
