The Wirecutter. Gentrification and its Discontents: Notes from New Orleans. Readers of this forum have probably heard rumors of gentrification in post-Katrina New Orleans. Residential shifts playing out in the Crescent City share many commonalities with those elsewhere, but also bear some distinctions and paradoxes. I offer these observations from the so-called Williamsburg of the South, a neighborhood called Bywater. Gentrification arrived rather early to New Orleans, a generation before the term was coined. Writers and artists settled in the French Quarter in the 1920s and 1930s, drawn by the appeal of its expatriated Mediterranean atmosphere, not to mention its cheap rent, good food, and abundant alcohol despite Prohibition. Initial restorations of historic structures ensued, although it was not until after World War II that wealthier, educated newcomers began steadily supplanting working-class Sicilian and black Creole natives.

We Killed Chivalry. How many times have you found yourself disappointed before, during, or after a date? I should use the term “date” loosely as it seems to me dates are comparable to a new Harry Potter book being published: only in my dreams. I hear people say that chivalry is dead. The idea of doors being opened on dates, long phone conversations, and getting to know one another before jumping into bed- well, these days are over. But why? Is it because of the invention of social media? These mediums that allow us to contact in a myriad of different ways- what’s a phone call or face-to-face conversation really worth? Or is it because we find ourselves so consumed in our own problems that we can’t possibly imagine sparing the time to involve someone else’s as well?

No…Chivalry is dead because we destroyed it. It’s time to stop making excuses for the way people treat us. If you want to date someone that treats you like a prize then don’t waste your time dating someone who makes you feel like a burden. Her Bad Mother — Bad Is The New Good. How to Talk to Your Daughter About Her Body | Sarah Koppelkam. How to talk to your daughter about her body, step one: Don't talk to your daughter about her body, except to teach her how it works. Don't say anything if she's lost weight. Don't say anything if she's gained weight. If you think your daughter's body looks amazing, don't say that. Here are some things you can say instead: "You look so healthy! " Or how about, "You're looking so strong. " "I can see how happy you are -- you're glowing.

" Better yet, compliment her on something that has nothing to do with her body. Don't comment on other women's bodies either. Teach her about kindness towards others, but also kindness towards yourself. Don't you dare talk about how much you hate your body in front of your daughter, or talk about your new diet. Encourage your daughter to run because it makes her feel less stressed. Help your daughter love soccer or rowing or hockey because sports make her a better leader and a more confident woman.

Tarshis says the attack took place in 1969, when she was 19 and working as comedy writer: ... [H]e told me that he wanted to work on a monologue together, and I had an idea for something about an earthquake that had just happened. It was my first earthquake. I had some funny lines, and he said, Sure, let's work on that. And then? We went up to his cottage after they were done shooting. Tarshis is the fifth woman to publicly accuse Bill Cosby of raping her. Perhaps it is not fair for a journalist to consider, or even publicize, anonymous allegations of criminal activity.

Most of these allegations came after Constand sued Cosby in civil court. A defense of Cosby requires that one believe that several women have decided to publicly accuse one of the most powerful men in recent Hollywood history of a crime they have no hope of seeing prosecuted, and for which they are seeking no damages. It was not enough. Little Seal | Ronan's blog. Will I Remember How To Love You. When I finally meet you, will I remember how to love you?

I think, somewhere in the last–what is it now? Almost 4 years? –of being mostly alone, or at least not in love, maybe I forgot what you’re supposed to do when you are in love. For instance, will I remember how to pull my limbs in from my nightly spread eagle in bed, and not hate you for taking up half the space that has, for so long, been mine, ALL MINE, GOD DAMNIT? Will I remember how to lie awake on Sunday morning while you sleep, counting the freckles that pepper your back? Will I remember how to care about all the boring, stupid minutiae of your job, and I don’t mean just pretend to care, but actually, genuinely give a shit when you call me up to tell me how your boss did so and so and it pissed you off? And if it turns out that I have become completely stupid and selfish, will you be patient enough to remind me how to love you? Get Rich Slowly - Personal Finance That Makes Cents.
