The Top Ten Misconceptions About Loki. Having spent a decade as a man of Loki, I've found that my first conversation about him with most heathens, and even most Lokeans, consists largely of dispelling the illusions cast by popular books on Nordic religion and mythology.

The Top Ten Misconceptions About Loki

I can understand why this happens, as I've read many of these books, which seem to rely entirely on century-old scholarship, unreliable translations and theories from similar books presented as fact. It is harder to understand why some heathens defend ideas from such sources so passionately. These concepts then spread from books to the internet, where simply inaccurate statements can become the basis of entire articles dismissive to the rôle of Loki in Nordic mythology, or attempting to reduce him to a Nordic devil. However, these portrayals simply do not match the Loki described by more than a dozen Old Norse and Icelandic sources. 1. The terms gjør and gýgr are then used for trolls and ogres, rather than jötnar. 2. 3 & 4. 5. 6.

The “Vanir Theory” NOTE - This conception of Waincraft is from its very initial theoretical stage.

The “Vanir Theory”

The practitioners’ and founders’ understanding of Waincraft and its underpinnings have progressed to the point that much of the below is no longer applicable. It is still offered here for historical and informational interest. There is a theory concerning the Vanir that runs in the face of much of modern reconstructionist thought – namely, that the race of Gods known as the Vanir are pre-Indo-European, and evidence and/or traces of them may be found in mythologies all across northern and central Europe, from Spain to Russia and from the Sámi to the Etruscans.

The premise of this theory is two-fold: 1. That the Vanir are an earlier race of Gods than the Æsir and equivalent IE deities, part of a temporal and archeological procession reaching back to the earliest human inhabitants to be found in Europe; and 2. I decided to try my hand at building a yule bock this holiday season. materials used; 2 bundles of wheat and rye straw from the garden. about 36 inches long and as much as i can fit my thumbs and fore fingers around. a spool of twine and scissors. red kid skin (red ribbon would work well too) i began by evening out my bundles of straw, flipping half of each bundle then evening em out and tying them up. next i soaked them in hot water for about 5 hours to soften em. i placed a heavy baking sheet and full gallon jug to keep them fully submerged. after soaking i stood them up to drain for half an hour. i laid a towel on my work table then decided upon the length of legs and torso by sliding the string around. i settled on 13ish inch legs (both ends) and 10ish inch torso (middle section). next i separated one end into two even sections and tied em off (this is now the hind legs) and pulled a few pieces out on the top center backside to braid into a tail.

The bunads were often inspired by the embroidery on rural cloting but they were made, and at first mainly used, in the cities. This is why you will find some spectacular interiors in the new book “Broderte Bunader”. Work from famous artists and carpenters, such as Kinsarvik, are found in several museums and even some private homes. I have been very lucky to get access to these rooms, and sometimes even large apartments. My second though was to give the models a look that would bring to mind the way the ladies were photographed at the beginning of the 20st century. . © Text and photo Laila Durán.
