In a short book, the reader is given a breadth of Chinese culture, economy and family. Each one of her characters represents a character from Cinderella’s world. But this princess lives a very different life, becoming her own Prince Charming in the end. Ma’s memoir breaks away from traditional biographies so that her story begins before she was born. The detailed background she displays to the reader about her father, grandfather, and grandaunt creates that illusion of comfort that she will be afford when she born. Ma’s strength lies in the beautiful convergence of history and life, so as the two become one. Ma’s best quality is that she makes her memoir access to all by not letting her story get the way of reality. Why you need to read Broken: A story of abuse and survival. Two Against the World

Whether I was reading Michael Crichton or Amy Tan or Tom Robbins, there had never been anything like it before in my life. The novel’s novelty passes, of course. I’m 35 now. I’ve read a dozen “we brought back the dinosaurs and they are mad” books. I’ve seen the conventions, and I’ve seen them interrogated. But I have never seen anything quite like “Eleanor & Park.” Eleanor is a “big girl” with bright red hair (kids on the bus call her Big Red, and she describes herself as resembling a barmaid) who has just returned to her home in Omaha, after being kicked out for a year and forced to stay with acquaintances. Park is a half-Korean kid who’s passably popular but separated from the larger social order of his school both by his race and by his passion for comic books and good music.
