Sixsigma. Business Process Management (BPM) - Business Architect Job Descr. I am often asked to describe the role of the Business Architect; the role is new enough that most Resource Managers do not have a job description on file. Of course, the answer depends on the context within which the question is asked. Sometime I describe what the Business Architect “does.” Other times I describe what the Business Architect “accomplishes.” Yet other times the inquirer really wants to know what “skills” the Business Architect should possess. When asked recently, I decided to take a shot at creating a job description. Following is that job description. Role The Business Architect plays a key role in structuring the enterprise in terms of its governance structure, business processes, and business information.

Organization The Business Architect reports into business management and works closely with a counterpart in IT to align technical solutions with business needs. I was recently asked by a customer if I know of any free process modeling and automation tools. This got me thinking of how many vendors provide a free edition of their software for unlimited use i.e. no trial basis or try before you buy editions. After some research I came up with the following short list. Free BPM and Process Modeling Tools: I have not evaluated each application so could not comment on their strengths and weaknesses but would be interested to hear about other free BPM and/or Enterprise Architecture tools so I can add them to my resource list.

The typical first BPM project issue: how deep to dig into a business process details? We were engaged into a process called “Purchase order by the three-tier agreement” in one of our first projects.

Here is the brief: A three-tier agreement is concluded by and between the buyer, the manufacturer and the supplier - manufacturer’s authorized partner. The agreement is designed as a framework: it specifies prices, terms and conditions, but not the items to be purchased nor the volume. The process consists of four majour phases: Agreeing the order.Signing the specification.Delivery.Payments and deal closure.

Let’s consider the first phase “Agreeing the order”. The first version of the process diagram looked like this: Then it became more compliacated. Let me skip the evolution of the process and proceed directly to the resulting diagram: The key point of this process is that there is a single performer: account manager. Rise of the Process Wiki « Thoughts on Collaborative Planning. A few weeks ago I became aware of Process Wiki ( when the founder of the wiki left a comment on one of my blog posts.

I was curious. Without surprise, the wiki site contains a good collection of example business processes. You can join to be a member, and collaborate either by contributing more process examples, or by commenting on the existing ones. Processes can be uploaded & downloaded as XPDL files, and the site has a converter to visualize the processes as BPMN diagrams. I believe this is a trend to allow for sharing of best practices through collaborative technologies. I called the founder of the Process Wiki, Paul van Erk, a Dutch business process consultant, to find out what his goals for the site were, and how well he thought it was going.

What has worked well? What has not worked well? Where is this going? He wants to make an easy way for people to not only share, but also to visulize and discuss processes. Like this: Like Loading... Network Blogs. Preface As a seasoned BPM practitioner you will have become aware of www.workflowpatterns.com which is one of the best BPM resources on the Web. Conceived and maintained by BPM "overlords" Wil van der Aalst, Arthur ter Hofstede and others, it provides a comprehensive survey and classifies recurrently used control flow, data flow and resource perspective patterns. As such, it ranks among my favorite BPM web sites. And by the way, I currently have a separate SDN article in the making which shall give you an overview over how we support many of these patterns in Galaxy.

For the time being (and as a "sneak preview"), I would like to elaborate on some of the more complicated patterns which do not even have a counterpart among the BPMN model elements. Thread Split Let's start with the simple stuff, which is how to spawn a number of concurrent threads (aka "tokens"). Here, a flexible "Total" number of threads is spawned using a plain loop pattern. Thread Merge Critical Section. 12 Different Ways to Model Business Processes « Active Knowledge. Several languages have been proposed for business process modelling. Though most of them follow the conventional representation of processes as a series of steps, they emphasize different aspects of processes and related structures, such as organizations, products, and data.

Consequently, they are suited for different kinds of processes. Even if you are determined to use a particular technique, knowledge of alternative approaches can still guide the modelling, by surfacing complementary points of view. In addition to the common transformational process models, this post discusses block structured languages, storytelling, and process modeling languages that are hierarchical, flow-oriented, role-oriented, communication-oriented, declarative, goal-oriented, timelines, product and document state machines etc. Tranformational Process Models Most process models take a transformational (input-process-output) approach.

Block Structured Programming Languages Storytelling Hierarchical Process Models. Inside Architecture : Collecting requirements from business pro. Ah, the sweet sounds of success. I got the opportunity, this week, to collect a list of requirements for a strategic planning tool that we will license and use within Microsoft IT (COTS). The fact that I got to collect requirements is not particularly cool. What is cool is this: I made a point of using a business process model to collect them in an agile process that took less than a week to run, start to finish. Every day, I try to find ways to make Enterprise Architecture relevant to stakeholders. This method, for those not familiar with it, involves insuring that a process model exists for the business, in each of the areas where a particular capability needs to be developed or improved. The advantage of this method is this: our requirements are far more rich, and far more complete, and developed far more quickly, than if we had simply employed 'traditional' use case analysis to derive them.

That detailed process work begins next week. EA works. What should come first, AS-IS or TO-BE? | The Process Executive. Most process modelling methods start with analysis of the existing processes, an as-is model. One of the challenges with as-is modelling is deciding how much work to do. Very detailed as-is models can be time consuming (costly) and may drain the organisations tolerance for Process Management activities very quickly. As-is modelling can also be quite hit-and-miss as the analysts try to decipher what the current process actually looks like, this can often be because there is not a single as-is process, there are many. The main purpose of an as-is model is to give a Process Project the information it needs to work out where improvements are needed and what is the starting point for change?

On the other hand, to-be modelling is a description of future desired processes. I find it fascinating to sit in a room and watch a selection of staff have a to-be model presented to them, you can see the defences rise – and everyone thinks it is not going to work – for different reasons. Forrester Report on Blueprint now Available « Barton’s Blog. Network Blogs. This morning as I was taking the kids to school and having to deal with the normal morning chaos, I started to think about how I might improve this activity. I started to initiate a mini process improvement project. I thought about the importance of rituals and structure to make this activity predictable and thus, less stressful. I soon realized that this restructuring might be difficult based primarily on the capricious nature of the children themselves. I could introduce a certain structure (get up earlier, go to sleep in their clothes for the next day, etc.) but somehow I don't think I would ever be able to achieve a perfect "process".

Note: OK. Some might say "Are you crazy? Somehow, this line of thought reminded me of some of the blogs that I had been reading on SDN concerning business process improvement. I admit - that from the corporate perspective- that a totally controlled process would be desirable inasmuch as it can be easily measured and repeated. BPX as Therapist Conclusion. Seeing is Believing - Business Process Visualization.

For the sake of argument: If every 1890 shop floor had an exceptional Process Manager on hand, productivity would have soared... but Roland's right: We can't be satisfied to stop with systems that automate 19th century businesses. It's the 21st Century, and we can do better than that. The key for doing better is Business Process Visualization (BPV).

In my 19th Century BPMS I discussed someone that I dubbed the "Process Visualizer". This is that person who took the raw metrics that the Process Manager had gathered and turned them into reports, charts and graphs that the Business Owner could use to understand the past and to plan for the future. BPV begins with the Process Diagram. The Business decides to improve their operations, so they hire an Analyst to come in and help them. The Analyst talks to a lot of people and produces an "As Is" Business Process Diagram. Now that the Analyst really understands what's going on, a new "To Be" Business Process Diagram is created. AIS Electronic Library (AISeL) - Jan Recker and Alexander Dreili. Abstract Process modelling has over the years become an essential skill in Information Systems and Business Process Management practice.

Consequently, more and more training programs have evolved, teaching different process modelling languages. Two popular process modelling languages are being compared in this experimental study. Experiment participants received extensive training in one language but not the other, leading to the expectation that learning outcomes would be better in the case of the familiar language. Our study provides empirical evidence that this is not the case. In fact, it is shown that participants achieved similar learning outcomes when confronted with the unfamiliar language. Our results lead to a fundamental question, namely whether it is actually an important teaching decision what sort of process modelling language is being taught.

BPMN for People and Robots - Process Is The Main Thing. How people activities look in various BPMN implementations? Let’s assume purely for illustration purposes that we have an “Inquiry to Order” process containing three activities: “Do This” (system), “Negotiate Contract” (human), “Do That” (system) and diagram it with several popular tools: itp commerce Business Process Modeler for Microsoft Visio: Unlike other tools presented, itp commerce tool doesn’t have execution engine, only simulation capabilities. TIBCO Business Studio: Swimlane name (”Sales Manager”) in TIBCO is just a label, it doesn’t affect the execution. The “real” participant is specified as activity attribute and isn’t displayed on the diagram. Another caveat: TIBCO’s studio lets you model much more than TIBCO iProcess process engine is able to execute. Oracle BMPS (aka BEA AquaLogic BPM or ALBPM): ALBPM uses proprietary notation by default - you need to switch visual theme to get closer to BPMN.

But unlike in TIBCO, studio and engine are ideally coupled. It’s a pity really. Lean Insider: The Tennis Ball Exercise. Can the Business Really Use BPM Technologies Without Help? BlueprintUpdate.
