One of the challenges of breaking into consulting is presenting yourself as a professional. One way that I do this is to share timelines for projects that I am working on – they show that I am organized and prepared, and provide a visual planning aid for those with whom I am working. Hot Tip – Office Timeline 2010: I recently found this free PowerPoint plug-in that incorporates an extremely easy to use timeline maker right into PowerPoint. It includes a wizard that walks you through, step-by-step, adding planning stages and milestones, creates a great-looking timeline, and then has options for tweaking the results.

We’ve had a number of posts talking about creating and using word clouds, primarily in terms of creating them through wordle. Word clouds take a set of text and create a cloud of the most frequent words in that text with word size within the cloud based on frequency. Here’s an example that I made today using the AEA square logo and the text from the AEA Guiding Principles for Evaluators .
AEA Guiding Principles for Evaluators as a Word Cloud I’ve turned to wordle time and again to make a word cloud, but I recently was introduced to Tagxedo and it solves a lot of the shortcomings in wordle and extends the functionality. You can upload your own image and wrap text around the image (or the inverse of the image). You can save to multiple formats including high-resolution formats appropriate for printing as well as the standard lower resolution options good for the web. I contribute each Saturday’s post to aea365. As part of our monitoring efforts for AEA’s website, we regularly review backlinks –links into a site from another site. Backlinks give you an idea of the level of exposure of a site, the types of ‘friends’ it keeps, and commentary related to the site’s content. For evaluators, checking backlinks can help you to: evaluate a program’s site, programs, and messaging; research a particular client or interviewee; or understand better the references to your own firm’s (or a competitor’s!) Website. Lessons Learned: No one approach to backlink exploration covers all backlinks. It is a computerised version of those notes. The design goal behind Stickies is that the program is small and simple. Stickies will not mess with your system files, or write to the registry.
