Global Ionospheric (TEC) Maps
GPS users with single-frequency receivers need ionospheric electron content information in order to achieve positioning accuracy similar to dual-frequency receivers. The GDGPS System provides a global real-time maps of ionospheric electron content (currently producing a map every 5 minutes). These maps are also of value in monitoring the effect of the ionosphere on radio signals, power grids, and on space weather.Solar and Heliospheric Observatory Homepage

SWPC - D-RAP
Conditions in the D region of the ionosphere have a dramatic effect on high frequency (HF) communications and low frequency (LF) navigation systems. Please click on dial to see Geo-Magnetic Storm Level for today. Dst values are extrapolated using most recent solar wind and magnetic field data when data gaps are present.

SOLAR STORM HEATS UP EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE: A flurry of solar activity in early March dumped enough heat in Earth's upper atmosphere to power every residence in New York City for two years. The heat has since dissipated, but there's more to come as the solar cycle intensifies. [ full story ] [ video ]
