On The Origin of Tomorrow

Since 1995, John Mitani, a primatologist at the University of Michigan, has been going to Uganda to study 160 chimpanzees that live in the forests of Kibale National Park. Seventeen years is a long time to spend watching wild animals, and after a while it’s rare to see truly new behavior. http://carlzimmer.com/articles/index.php?subaction=showfull&id=1259902071&archive=&start_from=&ucat=12&
This is a project to design and build a system that uses a combination of direct and indirect solar collection to generate electricity and store thermal energy in an economical, environmentally friendly, scalable, reliable, efficient and location independent manner using common construction materials. The project is being managed with a similar methodology to Open Source Software Development and the ideas and contributions are being published openly on the Internet without an attempt to secure patents. http://www.shpegs.org/index.html#mozTocId570529

Plastic bags recycled into nanotubes - tech - 11 December 2009 -

Waste plastic from "throwaway" carrier bags can be readily converted into carbon nanotubes. The chemist who developed the technique has even used the nanotubes to make lithium-ion batteries.
A paralysed man has "spoken" three different vowel sounds using a voice synthesiser controlled by an implant deep in his brain. If more sounds can be added to the repertoire of brain signals the implant can translate, such systems could revolutionise communication for people who are completely paralysed.
