As a result, the sweet spot for tablets like the coming iPad 3 is a two-year lifespan, though thriftier organizations are doing three years. That’s according to data from First American Education Finance. Customers include Tower School of Massachusetts, which rolled out 300 iPad 2s to grade 3-8 students last fall, and a private university in the southeast which began last fall what it hopes will be an annual rollout of 600 iPads to incoming freshmen. According to the HMH official press release, 78 percent of students in the pilot program scored "proficient" or "advanced" on the California Standards Test for spring 2011. Compared with the 59 percent of students that had the same rating using traditional textbooks, the iPad program seems to have been quite successful. HMH also notes that students in the pilot program were "more motivated, attentive, and engaged than traditionally educated peers. The answer is easy: YES, especially if the teacher has access to a Mac desktop or (preferably) laptop and a wifi network in the classroom. It is an even larger YES if the Mac device has the most current operating system. Having a computer to which the iPad can sync is not absolutely necessary, but it is a Best Idea. The Carts will make management of the iPads easier, because they provide a central place to store, recharge, and sync the iPads to the iTunes library on my laptop. It was quite a bit of work to get the iPads ready to go for the students. I made a few mistakes a long the way, but here’s the most efficient method that I’ve found for getting all the iPads up and running in a uniform manner, particularly if you already have a bunch of free apps and apps purchased from the Volume Purchase Program: 1.
