http://blog.eladgil.com/2011/12/how-pinterest-will-transform-web-in.html The most interesting wave hitting the social web in 2012 is social curation. This was kicked off in 2011 as Pinterest's growth was noticed by Silicon Valley and a number of companies quickly followed suit - Snip.It launched as a social information curation platform, Quora adopted boards for a similar purpose, and Fab.com launched a structured social commerce feed. In this blog post I will discuss the evolution of social media from long-form to push-button, the emergence of social curation on sites such as Twitter and Tumblr , and the move to structured sets of curated content on Pinterest and its brethren. ...Social Media: Evolving From Long Form To Push Button

http://www.poynter.org/how-tos/digital-strategies/155975/how-journalists-can-use-google-refine-to-clean-dirty-data-sets/ The first attempt at a lead for this post, it turns out, was pretty much the same lead I wrote five years ago when reviewing a book about dirty data. My lapse illustrates two things: First, that I have the memory of a goldfish and some bad habits to address. Second, that dirty data is a constant thorn in the sides of data journalists. Luckily, we now have a tool to address it.

Banjo's New Mobile App Connects People & Locations

The most important thing you need to know about Banjo , the Palo Alto-based startup launching its new mobile app today , is that it's not another social network. "Banjo is a social discovery service," explains CEO Damien Patton. "It's a layer on top." What he means is that you don't have to build a community on Banjo, you don't have to add or remove friends - in fact, you don't even have to create a profile to use it.

Lexical functional grammar (LFG) is a grammar framework in theoretical linguistics , a variety of generative grammar . It is a type of phrase structure grammar , as opposed to a dependency grammar . The development of the theory was initiated by Joan Bresnan and Ronald Kaplan in the 1970s, in reaction to the direction research in the area of transformational grammar had begun to take. It mainly focuses on syntax , including its relation with morphology and semantics . There has been little LFG work on phonology (although ideas from optimality theory have recently been popular in LFG research). LFG views language as being made up of multiple dimensions of structure.

Mint Founder Invests in Semantic Text Startup Topicmarks

Topicmarks , a startup that uses semantic text technology to extract the most important information from any document, is raising $700,000 in seed funding from qualified investors in a round led by Mint.com founder Aaron Patzer, Mashable has learned. Patzer, who sold Mint.com to Intuit for $170 million last year, is very smitten with the company. “These guys have tech developed over the last three years, a team of strong engineers, deals in place with Evernote and ShareVault already,” Patzer wrote on AngelList . “Also, I’ve done a dive into the algorithms behind the system, which are impressive and being patented.” We believe this is the first time Patzer has led a funding round. He has existing investments in Milo.com and HealthTap.

Apache Mahout:: Scalable machine-learning and data-mining library

Scalable to reasonably large data sets. Our core algorithms for clustering, classfication and batch based collaborative filtering are implemented on top of Apache Hadoop using the map/reduce paradigm. However we do not restrict contributions to Hadoop based implementations: Contributions that run on a single node or on a non-Hadoop cluster are welcome as well. The core libraries are highly optimized to allow for good performance also for non-distributed algorithms
