The summer 2013 course is intended for teachers, advanced high school students, and curious and dedicated individuals who have some familiarity with introductory mechanics. The RELATE course is more challenging than a standard high school or introductory college physics offering. We assume that you already know F=ma, and concentrate on giving you a global view of mechanics that combines with a systematic procedure for solving challenging problems – especially those involving several concepts at once. Mechanics is the study of how forces change motion.

Co-taught by CMU Assistant Professor Niki Kittur and a team of top industry developers, this project-based course will focus on the design and implementation of iPad applications that help users visualize and make sense of large data sets. Bridging theory and practice, the course will give students: a basic background in visualization;understanding of the cognitive processes involved in transforming visual representations into mental representations, insight and discovery; andinstruction on implementing these techniques in real applications for the iPad.

Codecademy, a new site that went live earlier this evening, might just be the answer. It’s a web-based, interactive programming tutorial that holds your hand and walks you through the basics of JavaScript. Codecademy’s initial signup process is very clever: there isn’t one, at least at first. The lessons themselves are pretty straightforward. As you progress through the lessons, you’ll rack up points and trophies, which are displayed on your profile.
