There are a million and one survival books out there and they all claim to teach you how to become Jeremiah Johnson over night.

It’s hard to figure out who to trust and what kind of survival books you should read. Here are 3 types of survival books you should read and why: 1. Military Manuals I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust the United States government any further than I can throw it. That said, I will still read Military Manuals for survival information. Why? While a Military Manual certainly isn’t the end all be all for survival situations, at least I know what I am getting. WTSHTF it might not be the most brilliant, the easiest, or the quickest – but it probably won’t kill you. 2. What? I have found that a good rule of thumb is avoid any so called survival book that Barnes and Noble will put on a display just to draw your attention to the title. It could evolve as systems are stressed after a natural disaster. It could be caused by a terrorist attack. It could even be the result of a societal or economic collapse. Have you ever thought about what might happen if our current health care system (EMS, Doctors, Hospitals, and Pharmacies) ceased to function normally? What would you do if you couldn't go to your doctor, all of the hospitals were shut down, all of the pharmacies closed, and no one answered the phone when you called 911?

You would be on your own. Many people have been forced to care for themselves due to partial or full system collapses in recent history. Those were just the big ones. In each of these events, medical care was limited or non-existent. In order to be successful, you have to have knowledge. Well, I've done the work for you. For suturing of skin wounds, the 3-0 and 4-0 Nylon are most useful to have on hand, though having some 5-0 available for lacerations of tender skin (face/children/fingers) is a good idea. For my own patients, I use professional suture, which does cost more, but is more difficult for the layman to procure. (Check back soon – I may begin offering this for sale on my own site.) The only problems I have had with the Unify suture, which I use for my live Survival Medicine classes, is that the needles may bend a little easier and the suture may detach from the needle a little easier than higher grade suture.

Still, I believe they are adequate for most wound closure and anyone can get them. For additional articles on suturing, see Essential Medical Skills to Acquire: Introduction and Doc Cindy on SurvivalBlog. eBooks - Urban Survival Site. Compendium of Useful Information. Preparedness Resources |
