CenturyLinkVoice: When Building The Big Data Stack, Don't Overlook Infrastructure

Open dialog on what constitutes “the stack,” as recently explored in this CIO.com article, increases the likelihood of developing repeatable processes that result in big data successes – and that’s an outcome we should all be striving for. Like many of the views in the CIO article, I’m convinced the big data stack’s time has arrived, and I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about its role in delivering big data applications in the context of an organization’s overall information architecture. However, my vision of a best practices stack begins differently, starting with: The infrastructure layer: Organizations require scalable, enterprise-grade compute, storage and networking, especially as they move from proof-of-concept to production big data apps.

Public cloud hosting is more oriented towards cost effectiveness, thus sacrificing availability and security along the way. On the other hand, managed cloud services put greater emphasis on high availability and security ahead of cost. Public cloud servers have to be purchased by the hour. On the contrary, managed cloud services are purchased on monthly contracts, and are ideal for businesses that run critical, long term enterprise applications. Network and Data Security Secured and dedicated VLANs, IDS/IPS and firewalls can be incorporated for any cloud server.
