Il y a beaucoup de « friture », des bruits parasites. En plus, le français de ces soldats est méconnaissable.

C’est lorsqu'on réécoute que la magie s’opère. Une sorte de curiosité, de fascination, s'empare alors de nous. Mais qui sont ces gens? Que disent-ils exactement? C’est tout un trésor qui a longtemps dormi « dans une pièce minuscule » de l’université Humbolt à Berlin. C’est Mona Guichard, attachée culturelle de l’Institut français d’Allemagne, qui a découvert le potentiel de ces archives baptisées « Lautarchiv ». C’était connu des universitaires, mais pas du tout du grand public. Elle cherchait une façon originale de parler de la Grande Guerre, un conflit tant exploré dans les dernières décennies.

WNYC Preservation and Archive Unit: A Rich Broadcasting Legacy. Archives Established in the year 2000, the WNYC Archives are the stations' physical link to its rich and storied past. Directed by Andy Lanset, an archivist and audio preservation specialist, the department provides a central repository for thousands of audio recordings, photographs, memorabilia, reports, news items, program guides, institutional records, and promotional materials. Among its holdings are more than 50,000 recordings in a variety of formats, from early lacquer and acetate discs, to reel-to-reel tapes, to digital audio tapes and compact discs.

The archive staff also includes Archive Manager John Passmore, Senior Archivist Marcos Sueiro Bal and Assistant Archivist Ana Cox who comes to us for two years through a generous National Endowment for the Humanities preservation grant. The Alan Lomax Sound Archive Now Online: Features 17,000 Recordings. A huge treasure trove of songs and interviews recorded by the legendary folklorist Alan Lomax from the 1940s into the 1990s have been digitized and made available online for free listening. The Association for Cultural Equity, a nonprofit organization founded by Lomax in the 1980s, has posted some 17,000 recordings. "For the first time," Cultural Equity Executive Director Don Fleming told NPR's Joel Rose this week, "everything that we've digitized of Alan's field recording trips are online, on our Web site.
