Low temperatures enhance ozone degradation above the Arctic
ScienceDaily (Jan. 19, 2012) — Extraordinarily cold temperatures in the winter of 2010/2011 caused the most massive destruction of the ozone layer above the Arctic so far: The mechanisms leading to the first ozone hole above the North Pole were studied by scientists of the KIT Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK). According to these studies, further cooling of the ozone layer may enhance the influence of ozone-destroying substances, e.g. chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), such that repeated occurrence of an ozone hole above the Arctic has to be expected. About a year ago, IMK scientists, together with colleagues from Oxford, detected that ozone degradation above the Arctic for the first time reached an extent comparable to that of the ozone hole above the South Pole. With the help of an expert panel of journal editors Chemistry World reviews the ground breaking research and important trends in this year's crop of chemical science papers. Beginning at the beginning There were plenty of discoveries that looked at how life may have got started on this planet, one of the most poignant being the rediscovery of forgotten samples from Stanley Miller's lab 1 . The forgotten samples from a 1958 experiment, analysed by Jeffrey Bada of the University of California, Santa Barbara, US, who was one of Miller's former students, suggest that volcanic plumes may have played an important role in the synthesis of biologically relevant molecules.

Rahoituksemme korkeakouluille ja tutkimuslaitoksille palvelee päämääristämme ennen kaikkea innovaatiotoiminnan kyvykkyyksien kasvattamista. Oikeanlaisten osaamisten avulla voimme saavuttaa sen kasvun, joka takaa sekä ihmisten että ympäristön hyvinvoinnin myös tulevaisuudessa. Yliopistot, korkeakoulut ja tutkimuslaitokset ovat yritysten ohella oleellinen osa innovaatiojärjestelmäämme.
Tutkimusrahoituksessamme on jatkossa paljon vanhaa, mutta myös vähän uutta. Jatkamme tutkijoiden ja yritysten yhdessä tehtävän tutkimuksen rahoittamista joko ohjelmissa (Elinkeinoelämän kanssa verkottunut julkinen tutkimus) tai yritysvetoisissa rinnakkaishankkeissa. Myös Tekesin rahoitus strategisen huippuosaamisen keskittymiin (SHOK) jatkuu osana uudistettua julkisen tutkimuksen rahoitusta. Niinikään vierailevien huippututkijoiden rekrytointi Suomeen eli FiDiPro-rahoitus jatkuu. by Jan 29
Toinen uusista rahoitusmuodoistamme tähtää tähän tarpeeseen. Strategisilla tutkimusavauksilla pyrimme antamaan tutkimusryhmille mahdollisuuden kokeilla jotain todella uutta. Jotain sellaista, jonka merkitystä ja relevanssia on vielä vaikea tietää varmasti, mutta jonka merkitys saattaa tulevaisuudessa olla todella suuri. Jos näin käy, yritysten kiinnostus tulee kyllä heräämään. Molempia uusia rahoitustoiminnan muotoja on kehitetty asiakkaita kuullen. Tänä vuonna ensimmäiset haut ovat auki. Alku voi olla opettelemista puolin ja toisin, mutta jo vuoden kuluttua saamme viitteitä kannattaako jatkaa. by Jan 29
Biopankkitoiminnan uusi sukupolvi
Biopankeista eli siis ihmisalkuperää olevien näytteiden ja tietojen kokoelmista on puhuttu Suomessa laskujeni mukaan ainakin 10 vuotta. Toki näytteitä on laitettu talteen enemmän tai vähemmän järjestelmällisesti sata vuotta tutkijoiden ja patologien arkistoihin, ja THL on kerännyt loistavia väestöaineistoja kymmeniä vuosia, mutta termi ”biopankki” lanseerattiin laajempaan suomalaiseen keskusteluun joskus vuosituhannen vaihteessa. Itsekin kannoin silloin korteni kekoon Tekesissä, kun teetätimme muutaman selvityksen keskustelun polttoaineeksi. Polttoaine ei kuitenkaan kovin ärhäkkääksi osoittautunut, ja höyry on tuntuvan olevan vähissä koko hommassa aivan näihin päiviin saakka.Suomen molekyylilääketieteen instituutissa FIMM:ssä emme kuitenkaan ole jääneet odottelemaan uuden lain kaikkien yksityiskohtien selkiintymistä, vaan lähteneet rakentamaan ensin keskitettyjä biopankkipalveluita yhdessä THL:n kanssa ja sitten niitä hyödyntäviä uusia näytekeräyshankkeita yhdessä HUS:n kanssa. Kutsumme näitä ”biopankkihankkeiksi”, vaikka sen termin sisältö tarkentuu vasta mahdollisen uuden lain myötä. Tällä hetkellä toimitaan tietysti nykylainsäädännön mukaisesti. by Jan 29
Molempia mainittuja uuden sukupolven biopankkihankkeita hallinnoi kliinikoista, biopankkitoimijoista ja potilaiden edustajista koostuva johtoryhmä, joka määrittelee ja julkistaa etukäteen periaatteet näytteiden käytölle. Mikä tahansa taho, joka täyttää määritetyt kriteerit ja todetaan tieteellisesti vahvaksi, pääsee käyttämään näytteitä. Keskeinen tavoite on mahdollisimman konkreettinen hyöty tuleville ja joskus jopa nykyisille potilaille. Tähän pyrkiminen onnistuu joskus suorana linkkinä klinikkaan, mutta saattaa toteutua myös yritysyhteistyön kautta. Biopankin arvo mitataan sen näytteiden käytön laajuudella ja vaikuttavuudella. by Jan 29
