How to mend a broken heart according to Buddhism. This continues on from Why do I feel so lonely?
So close and yet so far I have recently been in New York City for a week. People often say they feel lonelier in the middle of a huge city surrounded by millions of people than in a rural area with hardly anyone around. A friend of mine who used to live in London said he always felt somewhat alone there. I think this is because, when we are surrounded by others, we are holding even more tightly to our own sense of personal space, trying to protect ourselves from uncomfortable intrusion by strange “others”, increasing that gap. Crammed like sardines on the Path train to New Jersey, trying to assert some sense of control over their environment, everyone was vigorously avoiding eye contact, even as we were forced to bump up against each other around every corner (the sense of powerlessness not helped by being diverted to Holboken where the doors wouldn’t open.) Making Buddhist. Weddings & Ceremonies Some people consider Buddhism a religion. For others it is a technology for mindfulness. Some think of it as a bundle of practices that can be added on to one's existing beliefs. Whatever your belief, ceremonies, celebrations, memorials, marriages, and other events can be "more Buddhist" if they center on the main tenets of Buddhism. For Buddhists, there are two main areas of concern. Buddhist practices, including meditation, involve a commitment to stay in the midst of what is happening, and not to turn away even when something gets difficult, as it inevitably will. Since we practice staying in the present moment, Buddhism also encourages people to find their own truth- to experience fully all the 10,000 joys and 10,000 sorrows that Human existence brings to us in the present moment.
I am often asked what makes someone a Buddhist. I undertake the practice of protecting life.I undertake the practice of taking only what is offered. (if precepts not taken separately) History @ Shaolin.com. There are few historical entities that engender as much debate, confusion, and acrimony as the nature and reality of Shaolin.
We have heard distinguished university professors categorically deny the existence of either Shaolin or its problem-children Tongs; that only authenticated accounts by the Communist Chinese government are to be trusted; or that the temples are fictitious, based on stories in old novels. The following accounts are taken from sources who 1) practiced the specific kung fu styles to Master level from the "supposed" temples, 2) learned their arts AT those temples before the temples were destroyed, or 3) were taught by practitioners from those temples. Also, our sources were corroborated by at least three individuals (standard rule of evidence accepted by most professional journalists). The Shaolin order dates to about 540 A.D., when an Indian Buddhist priest named Bodhidharma (Tamo in Chinese), traveled to China to see the Emperor.
