Making a Reishi/Ganoderma Mushroom Double-Extract Tincture

Most plants are fairly easy to prepare in terms of medicine–you can either tincture them, use them fresh, or create a tea or something similar. Reishi, the most incredible healing mushroom, requires a bit more preparation than a standard tincture to extract all of the medicinal benefits. This post will describe the method for getting the most out of the reishi mushroom commonly found on Eastern Hemlocks in forests in the midwest and eastern US. This extraction method would work with any reishi mushroom, including those you would purchase or wildcraft.

To understand what we need to extract the mushroom’s healing properties, we have to understand where it derives its healing. This link has a wonderful overview to the Reishi’s medicinal properties and the research that has been done (this link is on Ganoderma Lucidium, but research done on Ganoderma Tsugae suggets the same compounds are present). Have you ever considered growing mushrooms in your garden? A wide variety of fungi possess qualities of edibility and/or aesthetic beauty appropriate for both the flower and kitchen gardens, or even for general landscaping. They may be grown with no greater effort than that required for plants. In fact, many varieties will thrive nicely with little or no maintenance. Agaricus species (the Portobello, the Prince, the Horse Mushroom, etc.) are adaptable to grassy areas among trees. Edible Tricholomas growing in a Garden in Thailand. According to Wikipedia, hydrogen peroxide is a clear and odorless liquid similar to water with a strong oxidizing capacity. Due to its oxidizing properties it is used as a bleach or cleaning agent. For consumers, it is usually available from pharmacies at 3 and 6wt% concentrations. Commercial grades from 70 to 98% are also available, but the latter require special care and dedicated storage. And when I say finally, I mean FINALLY. I have been working so hard to get the main garden planted (and reading fiction novels which is quite un-characteristic for this non-fiction bookworm) that I have been struggling to get the Herb and ‘Shroom Garden going. But it is my goal over this next week to be all set in finishing up the rest of my oak logs for shiitake mushrooms and to plant an oasis worth of basil, parsley, rosemary, and other herbs to fill up our teeny, tiny side yard. And as part of that goal, I have finished half of the one hundred (yeah… that’s not a typo) inoculated plugs I ordered. Reishi  (Ganoderma lucidum)

Agar (pronounced /ˈɑːɡər/, "AH-gər") or agar-agar (/ˈɑːɡərˈɑːɡər/, "AH-gər-AH-gər") is a gelatinous substance, obtained from algae and discovered in the late 1650's or early 1660's by Minoya Tarozaemon (美濃屋 太郎左衛門) in Japan, where it is called Kanten. Agar is derived from the polysaccharide agarose, which forms the supporting structure in the cell walls of certain species of algae, and which is released on boiling. These algae are known as agarophytes and belong to the Rhodophyta (red algae) phylum .[1][2] Agar is actually the resulting mixture of two components: the linear polysaccharide agarose, and a heterogeneous mixture of smaller molecules called agaropectin.[3] The gelling agent in agar is an unbranched polysaccharide obtained from the cell walls of some species of red algae, primarily from the genera Gelidium and Gracilaria. Measure out 5.75 grams of nutrient agar powder to 1 cup of clean water (ample for 5 or more Petri dishes). Begin to heat and stir until the agar is completely dissolved. As it begins to boil, continue to stir for a minute and then remove from the heat. Pour a thin layer into your Petri dishes and cover with lids. Wrap in aluminium foil and pressure cook with your grain (or for at least 30 minutes at 15 psi). Taking the mushroom by its base, carefully spit it in two.
