The Forge Forums - Index. Alternate Reality Sessions | Monte Cook. For quite a while, I was playing in an online D&D game (via G+ hangouts) with a bunch of my original game group friends. It was a very casual game, basically a dungeon crawl. And like happens so often, often not everyone could make it. In fact, it was literally never the same group two sessions in a row. The problem of player continuity is one that often rears its head. Some RPG groups won’t play unless everyone involved can make it. Others make up on the fly reasons why a certain PC is missing, or how one missing before suddenly catches up with her friends.

Here’s how we handled it in this online game (at least, this was my take on it, which I really took a liking to). Session 1. Session 2. Session 3. The point here is that the adventure just keeps going on. That campaign appears to have drawn to a close, but this is an idea I am going to pick up again soon, and maybe tinker with a bit. There is a PDF of the beta test rules, um, floating around out there, but I haven't done a side-by-side comparison with the finished product to see how close it comes. There is a whole chapter of ships in the book, with more than enough to start with - the WEG and WOTC systems had about the same number in their corebook - they filled holes later with supplement. The supplement on Corellia, coming before the end of the year, has already promised an vast array of new fast Corellian ships.

Age of Rebellion, the next game in the series, is going to have ships more adapted to a military campaign - X-wing, Star Destroyers, Mon Calamari capital ships, etc. So in other, words, as with every RPG, judging one corebook against an entire past line is silly. As for settings, this game focuses on the Original Trilogy. I'm pretty sure this is a Lucasfilm mandate for the time being, considering how every licensed products released in the last year is OT focused.

On The Vocabulary of Role-Playing. Notes Towards Critical Consistency? By Phil Masters Note; this article first appeared in issue 2 of the late and greatly lamented periodical Interactive Fantasy. If we are going to discuss role-playing games with any kind of rigour, we are going to need to define our terms. Ever since (formalised) role-playing first took off, players and GMs have been developing a fairly extensive specialised vocabulary, and this has often been terse, expressive, and descriptive.

Unfortunately, its contents have rarely been formally defined, and sometimes, inevitably, ambiguities and variations of meaning have developed. And, of course, newcomers to the field have not been presented with any kind of comprehensive glossary. It would be pleasant to say that this article is designed to remedy all this. In an attempt to reconcile rigour and flippancy, each entry incorporates a formalised element of schizophrenia.

Sources Most of these terms have been in common use within "the hobby" for years. Fantasy Cartography by Mike Schley at Coroflot.com. Dungeons and Dragons. Cracked on Dungeons and Dragons The world of Dungeons and Dragons is not actually one world at all, but a nearly infinite number of realms and universes, all with spell casters, valiant warriors, and women with the most revealing chain mail bikinis ever imagined by the sordid minds of fourteen year old boys.

Over the last two weeks, we’ve looked at two plotting methods. One helped us parse our story into parts, the other helped us grow it from an idea. But a weakness of both is that neither really tells us what kind of events we need in a story—especially in the sagging middle. The Hero’s Journey is based on the universal archetype work of Carl Jung, as applied by Joseph Campbell. I first learned about the hero’s journey in high school. Ahem. The Hero’s Journey The story begins in The Ordinary World. Then comes the Call to Adventure. Normally, the hero isn’t interested. Fear doesn’t have to be the only reason for refusal—he may also have noble reasons, or perhaps other characters are preventing him from leaving (on purpose or inadvertently). Sometimes it takes a mentor to get the hero on the right path. The Ordeal. What do you think? CBG Wiki - The CBG Wiki. " How many campaigns have begun with these immortal words? Probably too many. This conceit has been used so often to introduce PCs to one another and begin a campaign that it has become a cliche. Characters meeting for the first time at the beginning of a story is a classic device in literature, cinema, and television. Either way, a campaign has to begin somehow, usually by gathering the PCs together and giving them a common goal. The PCs are members of a trade caravan. Home | DM's GURPS Page. - StumbleUpon. Amusing Orcish Anecdote. Amusing Orcish Anecdote posted Tuesday, July 31st 2007 by Jonathan Drain None of the Above From 4chan’s traditional game’s board comes this amusing orcish anecdote: Reminds me of a friend’s character from a D&D game a while back. He was a half-orc barbarian who was absolutely convinced that he was a wizard. He had an arsenal of “spells” such as “Blind” (kicking dirt in the enemy’s face), “Inside-Out Man” (a slash to the enemy’s gut), and “Invisible Head” (decapitation). Best of all was his familiar, who’s name was “Rock”. Rock was just an ordinary rock…but not to him. Comments for this article are closed. Necrobard's World of Darkness Rules. The people backing at that level get to, among other things, request a specific article written by me, here on my blog. Backer Nick Finck asked me to write about plots in rpgs. Specifically, the balance of structured plots and story arcs versus unstructured and more open-ended shoot from the hip style campaign development. This is of course, a big topic. And an important one. For the purposes of this article, I’m going to use the term “structured” to mean any type of adventure or campaign that encourages the PCs to go from point A toward point B.

And for the purposes of this article, I’m going to use the term “sandbox” to describe an adventure or campaign that provides areas, characters, and potential plot hooks at point A, but really provides no point B. There are strong (very strong) advocates for one of these styles over the other. A sandbox campaign, of course, allows players to choose what the characters do. Review of In a Wicked Age.
