Earlier today Mozilla introduced Collusion , an add-on for the Firefox browser that shows you how companies are tracking you as you surf the Web. A cool visual demonstration of the software illustrates all the links that form as you crisscross just a few popular sites online, including IMDB, the New York Times and the Huffington Post. The software shows the connections between sites you visit and third-party tracking and advertising networks such as Doubleclick and Scorecard Research. It makes plain the invisible web that has been woven through the Web. The software was created as a protoype by Atul Varma, who explained in a blog post that he “didn’t know a lot about tracking myself, so I whipped up a Firefox add-on called Collusion to help me visualize it better,” he wrote. “The results were a little unsettling .” http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2012/02/28/how-to-tell-whos-tracking-you-online/

Happiness interview: Danielle LaPorte . I heard about Danielle LaPorte several years ago, when I read a Domino magazine article about her work. I found her ideas so interesting that I got in touch with her, and over the years, I've gotten to know her better and better. There's tremendous buzz around her latest book, which hits the shelves next week. The Fire Starter Sessions: A Soulful + Practical Guide to Creating Success on Your Own Terms is a terrific resource for anyone who wants to get clarity on what they want and how to get there.

(UPDATED) Given that the alleged winning ticket in the photo above was purchased in California (lottery officials say the actual winning tickets, worth a total of $656 million, were sold in Maryland, Kansas, and Illinois), and that some of the numbers on the ticket show telltale signs of tampering, none of the 80,000+ gullible Facebook users who've shared it so far should plan on striking it rich any time soon. No one knows exactly how or when April Fools' Day originated, but it may have had something to do with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in the mid-1600s, which resulted in New Year's Day being switched from the last week in March to the first of January. Legend has it — i.e., for all we know, it's utter nonsense — that the very first "April fools" were those clueless few who, because they were ignorant or skeptical of the calendrical change, continued to ring in the New Year on the eve of April 1. http://urbanlegends.about.com/

I ran across the Wikipedia article on this subject today. While I found it fascinating and enthralling, it also took me about half an hour to properly decode the notation being used, so here I have interpreted it for the layman. A string is a finite series of symbols. All the symbols must be chosen from the same alphabet. If we use Roman letters as our alphabet, then some example strings would be:

800 CEO READ - Business Books & Great Ideas

Line By Line - ImageThink's Graphic Facilitation Blog: Picturing Big Ideas

Last week I (Heather) flew from New York down to Orlando to, you guessed it, DISNEY WORLD ! I had the opportunity to graphic record for Austin Brock from the Disney Institute . Austin has an amazingly rich visual language and practices what she preaches when speaking on the art of storytelling to Build a Business. I was excited to scribe for Austin, it seemed like a perfect match between her visual language and our visual storytelling! In the presentation, Austin spoke to the importance of "storytelling your culture," stating that the key is to connect experiences with your customers through sharing stories. She encouraged the sales folks in the audience to take a shot at "storytelling your business practices" by letting people know your history, your identity, and your vision.

Economics and Politics by Paul Krugman - The Conscience of a Liberal - NYTimes.com

I’ve been getting the predictable hysterical reactions to today’s column. And it’s true — I’m a Sharia Jewish atheist Marxist who hates America! Bwahahaha! But one thing actually worth reacting to is the assertion I keep getting that this is all a distraction, that even if we seized all the money of the top 0.1% it would make no difference to the fiscal outlook. Here’s a piece of advice nobody will take: before you make assertions about numbers, look at the numbers. So, what we learn from IRS data is that in 2007, before the Great Recession depressed everyone’s income, the top 0.1% had around $1 trillion in taxable income.

Whoa. What did I just read? I think most of you know of Freakonomics, but in case you don't, it started as a book in 2005, by economist Steven Levitt and journalist Stephen Dubner. The book examines corners of life (like cheating in sumo) through data.
