63 In-Depth Synthesis Tutorials by Sound on Sound. Synthesisers are as popular as ever and possibly getting more so every year. If you're new to synthesis and things still seem a bit daunting, don't worry. The music magazine Sound on Sound has an amazing long running tutorial series on the topic. 63 tutorials total released from May 1999 to July 2004. From the basic components of a synth and different types of synthesis to synthesising all kinds of instruments whether it's strings, brass, wind instruments or various percussive sounds. This tutorial series is certainly the most extensive of its kind on synthesis. Even for producers and musicians who are well acquainted with synthesis, there is something new to learn or knowledge to freshen up.

All of the tutorials are still accessible, even if not directly via the magazine's website. If you prefer to be able to read these tutorials offline, you're in luck. Share this article with others! No longer the preserve of men in laboratories or capes, the modular synth business is thriving, and it’s now easier to go modular than ever before. Read on and we’ll show you how... Jyoti Mishra Modular synths, eh? Monolithic beasts emitting squeals and stridulations under the hands of caped sonic crusaders. Seductive, intimidating and surely far too complex for the average keyboardist? Even though I’ve been playing synths for 26 years, this was my view of modulars until only a few months ago. In this feature, I’m going to explain how and why I changed my mind about modulars, how I chose my modular and why you, too, should be going modular.

When I Were A Lad... Just a small part of Lester Barnes’ Fat Bastard system. Say the word ‘synthesizer’ to most people and they’ll think of a keyboard with a knob-laden control panel and perhaps some blinking LEDs. The irony is that modulars were the first commercial synthesizers. Modular Whatisizer? Of course, this in itself isn’t a bad thing.

Back in the day when I was blogging at the now-defunct kore.noisepages.com, I did a series on the inner structure of a basic sequencer macro, one that could be easily adapted for many uses. Those posts have vanished into the bit-ether, so I'm rebooting the topic with a revised macro and an ensemble that shows how to use it. And here it is! Download link All controls are tool tipped - there's sequence length and clock speed controls, an IC send menu and value range controls - see below for details. Last time around, I posted the macro and dived right into the inner structure, explaining it bit by bit from the inside out.

I think this was useful but lacked a degree of... instant gratification. So this time around I'm going to start with a simple demo ensemble that shows how you can use it right off the bat. This demo instrument is a rhythmic FM noisemaker that has three sequencer macros mapped to the volume, carrier pitch and modulation amount. Now, why is this macro called the Roux? Twisted Tools- Reaktor Ensembles. Synthesis Basics. Table of Contents Introduction This article is a (relatively) brief introduction to the principles of music synthesis.

Each of the basic components of synthesizers are explained, along with descriptions and examples of how these components are chained together to make interesting sounds. The principles discussed are not unique to any specific synthesis platform, but are applicable to music synthesis in general. I hope this article will help interested musicians and composers access the academic tools and literature associated with electronic music. Most electronic music literature assumes a linguistic and conceptual vocabulary which is opaque and inaccessible to the beginner. There's no good reason for this. What is AudioMulch? | AudioMulch. AudioMulch is an interactive musician's environment for PC and Mac. It is used for live electronic music performance, composition and sound design. AudioMulch allows you to make music by patching together a range of sound producing and processing modules. Unlike some patcher-based programming environments, AudioMulch's modules perform high-level musical functions, so you don't have to create things from the ground up using individual oscillators and filters. AudioMulch is designed for live performance and improvisation - you can process live audio sources and control every knob and slider on the user interface using a MIDI controller.

Learn more about AudioMulch's capabilities below... AudioMulch is sometimes hard for people to grasp so imagine it this way. But what if, while you were playing, the guitar could be repatched via the filters in the synth, the trumpet routed through the fuzz pedal and tape delay, the drum machine used to gate the keys?
