Some definitions exist within the design world and refer to design in its traditional sense, meaning the shaping of products and services. Other definitions refer to social design as the creation of social reality; design of the social world. Responsibility[edit] Within the design world social design is sometimes defined as a design process that contributes to improving human well-being and livelihood.[1] The agenda of social design is inspired by among others' Victor Papanek’s idea that designers and creative professionals have a responsibility and are able to cause real change in the world through good design.

Papanek writes about responsible design. Strategic thinking[edit] Another starting point for outlining social design is strategic thinking of design. Environmental Behavior Cluster Environmental Behavior is an inherently interdisciplinary field. A program of studies with a concentration in this cluster can be designed to integrate the behavioral sciences and design arts for greater depth and specificity than is available individually from either of these disciplines.

The cluster can provide a graduate track for students interested in exploring and developing knowledge of the mutual relationship of human behavior and the natural and built environments, and their application to planning and design. Qualifications The Environmental Behavior cluster is best suited for those students already admitted to IGS who have an undergraduate major in any of the design disciplines, or students with a solid background in at least one design discipline and an ability to relate in a significant way to at least one of the three chosen social science areas of study.
