By Nancy Fried Foster, Nora Dimmock, and Alison Bersani Introduction: Background and reason for the project Early in 2007, the University of Rochester’s River Campus Libraries decided to revamp the libraries’ web presence. The library website serves many purposes, the most important being to provide an entry point to the library catalog, subscription databases, and digital repository. The site contains extensive information about other library resources and services, such as special collections, interlibrary loan, electronic reserves, news and events, and library locations and hours. It also aggregates and highlights course content and related resources, providing for the use of databases and other finding aids, contact with librarians, and access to other important library information. River Campus Libraries has developed a process for new technology design and development, represented in Figure 1.

CD-DIAL (Community Development–Data Information and Analysis Laboratory) Program: CD-DIAL works with communities, organizations, and state and local agencies to assist and build decision-making capacity in these groups, especially as they collect and use information about their local population members or the constituents they serve. We conduct surveys through mail, online and telephone surveys. We work with stakeholders from conceptualizing the survey (i.e. questionnaire development, sampling, etc.) up to report writing/presentation of the result.

We work closely with the client. CD-DIAL can produce mailing lists if needed. Audience: Organizations, local governments, and state and local agencies Estimated Fee: Costs dependent on scope and duration of project. Fees for community assessment work are figured on an individual basis, depending on sample size, data-gathering technique, and degree of analysis requested. Location: Anywhere in Iowa Availability: CD-DIAL is now accepting inquiries for upcoming projects.

Diploma 5 - Eugene Lee. Eugene Lee Serpentine Flow investigates the continuous evasive movement of Capoeira. The Brazilian martial art describes the blurred boundary between different social groups and induces spontaneous social conditions. The proposal challenges the concrete boundary established by the authorities between Santa Marta Favela of Rio de Janeiro and the rainforest.

Through a hidden tunnel entrance in the favela, you descend into an anarchic underground world beneath the rainforest. A continuous ramp space winds through eight different programmed spaces, providing much needed amenities for the children and community of the favela. Mita Solanki Urban Hub: Creating interactive exchange spaces Current public realm framework feeds design that creates sterile urban environments where streets become purely operative. The problem is perpetuated by large island developments. Through the process of intensification of active urban edge conditions and the mediation of 3 overlapping Masterplans, the New Covent Garden Market, the US Embassy & the Nine Elms Opportunity Area; a new inserted central hub & interactive perimeter aims to unify & celebrate the everyday physical and social structures of the city and enrich Vauxhalls urban fabric & facilities.

URBAN SCALE: The proposal Inserts the rules of exchange & control of a high street, wholesale market & training facilities in order to prompt a series of new social exchanges & intensified active perimeters on the existing operative market site. Diploma 7 Masters: Simon Beames, Kenneth Fraser ‘We must subject technology and science to the economy of the poor and penniless. We must add the aesthetic factor because the cheaper we build the more beauty we should add to respect man.’ Hassan Fathy Schools are important public buildings; the experience of school is culturally defining and registers dominantly in personal memory and development.

Our projects this year were set in southern Lebanon in the context of Palestinian refugee camps and the divided city of Beirut. In an area which has always known conflict, the school building is a place to restore community and a safe haven, effectively a ‘child-friendlyspace’. By designing for long-term development as well as humanitarian issues, we mean not only dealing with natural disasters and conflict but involving ourselves in systemic issues. Participation and communication are essential – this also involves raising awareness. San Francisco Art Institute. Small Scale, Big Change | Project Index.

Monday, November 1, 2010 A collaboration between Architect Gerard Damiani and Artist Jeremy Boyle is profiled in the recently released Small Scale: Creative Solutions for Better City Living by Princeton Architectural Press. A quote from Princeton Architectural Press: “Think big, design small. This is the rallying cry of a new generation of architects and artists who aim to improve the lives of city-dwellers through small-scale public design projects. Using the city as an open-source platform for ideas, these visionaries create "urban interventions" to address problems specific to urban life.

The projects in Small Scale are organized into three sections: those that provide practical services, those that share information, and those that simply delight. Since moving to downtown Los Angeles, SCI-Arc has sought opportunities to engage various local communities by spearheading a number of tactical, action-based projects, which enable students to collaborate directly with community agencies and undertake design/build projects. Each project deals with some form of practical and urgent problem solving circumstance.

This might involve the creation of built structures or functional implements, or the imparting of vital skills to community members or at-risk groups. Drawing upon the professional expertise of architects, urban planners, computer designers, visual artists, social scientists, cultural theorists and others, SCI-Arc faculty and students have demonstrated a powerful capacity to impact specific social problems, working with intentionally short lead-times and reacting quickly to address immediate conditions. SCI-Arc's Community Programs are made possible in part by a grant from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. College of Architecture Graduate Program.
