Gender identity is often rooted in the socialisation of one's gender, where gender identity of being a male or a female are often defined by the society.



Males are often associated with masculine characteristics such as aggressiveness, competitiveness, being more athletic or loud and messy. Males are also often thought to be good in academic subjects such as math or science. Alternatively, females are often associated with feminine characteristics such as submissiveness, emotional or being more studious and neat.

Society can also define the gender roles expected of men and women. For example, gender roles for women might include being more domesticated and helping with house chores, while gender roles for men include being the "breadwinner" of the family (Eagly, 1987).
