[Trion Worlds' first launch, Rift, is an ambitious MMO in a space crowded with also-rans from major studios -- so what sets it apart? Executive producer Scott Hartsman discusses the game in detail -- from design to launch logistics.] Earlier this month, Trion Worlds launched its first game, Rift. The company, founded in 2006, had long trumpeted its dynamic server technology as the wave of the future for MMOs and other online games. It had also publicly debuted this project in 2008. The game was then under the stewardship of Might & Magic creator and Trion co-founder Jon Van Caneghem, who left the company in 2009 and moved to Electronic Arts.

Gamasutra recently spoke to CEO Lars Buttler, who talked of Trion's huge ambitions -- to be at the forefront of the transformation of games to fully and permanently online experiences, as he sees it. My name is Scott Hartmsan, I am the Executive Producer of Rift and I work at Trion Worlds and we make an amazing amazing game that is in beta right now. It seems that some comparisons between Rift and WoW are inevitable. The coin economy was just supposed to be easily approachable more than anything else. What about the auction house? Reported by Gamasutra, David Reid, SVP at Trion Worlds, was in a session discussing the landscape of the online gaming genre. He first discussed RIFT: He first turned to Rift, the company’s first release from March, which he explained now has over one million customers and is the “second largest MMO in the West.” With RIFT’s aggressive content delivery, it is no surprise that the game is expanding.

We’d like to see actual numbers in a press release though. He also mentioned the title of the upcoming patch 1.5: He said that, using this feedback the studio was able to put this information to use for the upcoming update Ashes of History. We can’t wait.
