Checkerboard Cookies worth the effort (with recipe) If you’d like a show-stopper of a cookie to serve to guests over the holidays, this recipe for Vanilla Chocolate Checkerboard Cookies should do the trick. If you’d like a show-stopper of a cookie to serve to visitors, this recipe for Vanilla Chocolate Checkerboard Cookies should do the trick.

The concept is similar to pinwheel cookies, another holiday favourite and cookie exchange mainstay. Two doughs are made — one vanilla flavoured, the other chocolate flavoured — then combined together when forming the cookies for a visual effect of contrasting colours. Use a container the same approximate width of your donkey/burro piñata cookie cutter, and line it with plastic food wrap. Cover the layered dough and freeze for four hours or overnight. Remove the dough from the container and unwrap from the plastic. Immediately after you take them out of the oven, use your burro piñata cookie cutter to cut the cookie shapes.
