“We’re expecting to hire somewhere around 10,000 people over the next five years, but it may be as high as 15,000,” said Bill Bell, vice president of human resources and administration for the unit of Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc., also headquartered in Newport News. In 2011, Bell estimates, the company will hire about 2,000 people, including 1,500 trade or craft workers and 500 salaried employees. -based South Boats Special Projects for its design for aluminum catamarans, mainly used to service wind farms. Blount will be the exclusive manufacturer of the design in the United States. South Boats is a major player in the European wind farm service vessels market, a news release said. The U.S. has stricter regulations about importing foreign vessels than the U.K., so Blount will be able to manufacture the boats for the U.S. as well as, in the long-term, possibly export the boats back to the U.K. or Europe. The South Boats vessels are in high demand abroad, said Marcia Blount, president of the Warren-based shipyard, to Providence Business News, noting they have about 16 under construction. Blount said that the company hopes to finish a prototype of the aluminum catamaran by next June for a scheduled boat show in New Bedford.

After several attempts and much trouble, Squalus was finally raised on September 13 and towed to the shipyard.
