The Luskwood community is a unique one in Second Life, both as the most well known "furry" place on the Grid, and probably the oldest one furry or otherwise with it's ninth anniversary coming later this year. Among the four residents whom started the place, or founders, the most known is Michi Lumin. Recently I met up with Michi, and we agreed to meet for an interview.

http://modemworld.wordpress.com/ Immersive, virtual environments come in many forms – and those developing them are seeking some novel approaches to developing such spaces that can be interactive on both an individual and a social footing. Last year, I explored The Blu , which took this idea into the oceans of the world, allowing people to explore water, collect fish, interact with one another and create content with which to populate the various oceans. Yesterday, I was pointed to another immersive environment which is still in what might be called a “beta” (or at least, start-up) phase, one which takes a far grander setting in which to immerse users: the cosmos around us.

http://dwellonit.taterunino.net/ Participants express satisfaction with learning stress-reducing techniques via Second Life online environment A small study from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) researchers found that online virtual communities may be an effective way to train patients in meditation and other mind/body techniques. The ability to learn and practice approaches that elicit the relaxation response – a state of deep rest that has been shown to alleviate stress-related symptoms – in a virtual environment could help surmount several barriers that can restrict participation.

Identity

For this answer, I'll assume you're both roleplaying in Second Life, at least in the sense that you haven't shared any real life details with each other. Since you're both roleplaying, you shouldn't feel any more responsible to disclose your real gender than you would to disclose any other RL details, since it's a given in these situations that you're playing a character on some level.

Honour's Post Menopausal View

http://honour-mcmillan.blogspot.com/ There are a lot of misconceptions about the internet in general and virtual worlds in particular and no I'm not even talking about the proverbial fat guy in the basement (he's OK by the way, once you get past his grunting and unwillingness to take showers) . Relevant to this post is the idea that the technology is "alienating" and that we can become more isolated by becoming immersed in the "fake" lives we create. This might be true for some but for others it provides a totally opposite experience. Fearless Nation welcome(s) all PTSD sufferers, their families, friends, and clinicians, war veterans, law enforcement personnel, emergency response workers, those traumatized by sexual abuse, child abuse, torture, human trafficking, hostage events and crime, man-made and natural disasters, and physical, psychological, and verbal trauma . They provide information, access to resources, classes, workshops, support groups and more.

Farewell sLiterary

Few places in SL have shaped my inworld life as much as sLiterary , so it was with great sadness that I read this weekend of the closure of this and its neighbouring sims. sLiterary has been the home of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) - due to kick off next week - for the past four years and it was my first SL NaNo - AFK - which kick-started my identity as 'writer' in the metaverse.
I could chat with Tom Boellstorff all day – but I’ll take an hour when I can get it, as I recently did on Metanomics (full video at the end of the post). During my recent interview with Rod Humble, the new CEO of Linden Lab, I had one major piece of advice: reach out to Tom and spend some time with him (and while you’re at it, hire an ethnographer to work at the Lab!). DUSAN: So one of the concepts that you followed in your book quite beautifully and, I think, made clear that although there may be multiple cultures within Second Life, there was also a Second Life culture, which was defined by certain things that the broader community had in common.

Here are snapshots of various new resident experience regions Linden Lab have rolled out over the years including the historical orientation islands and help islands. Historical snapshots below (SL beta – 2012) and feel free to share your new resident experience memories in comments. What’s next ?
