Vibrating Micro Plates Bring Order to Overcrowded Radio Spectrum

And this number will only increase further. There are still no good filters to keep all those future standards separate. Researchers at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology have taken an important step with a new type of filter, based on micromechanics. They have published their finding in Applied Physics Letters. Filters that can be accurately tuned to the frequency band you want to receive as a user are becoming increasingly important.

One of the reasons for choosing a mechanical solution is that the conventional filter consists of an inductor and a capacitor, an ‘LC circuit’. Vibration The solution presented by the researchers consists of two mechanical resonators. For more information visit www.utwente.nl/en. Piezoelectric Actuators for Functionally Graded Plates- Nonlinear Vibration Analysis

Introduction Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are a new generation of composite materials wherein the material properties vary continuously to yield a predetermined composition profile. These materials have been introduced to benefit from the ideal performance of its constituents, e.g., high heat/corrosion resistance of ceramics on one side, and large mechanical strength and toughness of metals on the other side. FGMs have no interfaces and are hence advantageous over conventional laminated composites.

FGMs also permit tailoring of material composition to optimize a desired characteristic such as minimizing the maximum deflection for a given load and boundary conditions, or maximizing the first frequency of free vibration, or minimizing the maximum principal tensile stress. The concept of developing smart structures has been extensively used for active control of flexible structures during the past decade [1-3]. Figure 1. Mr. Basic PCB with motor controller. SMF Swordfish Piezoelectric Gun Lighter Disassembly, Repair, and Internals « Gengar's DevBlog. By Gengar003 The "SMF Swordfish" is a piezoelectric, butane-powered, antique-styled gun lighter. Mine broke recently, so I had to take it apart to diagnose the problem and fix it. For an item so cheap and "made in China," it's remarkably modular, serviceable, and well-engineered. Here's how to disassemble it, and how all the internal parts work. First, remove the screw on the muzzle. If you want, you can also remove the side wheels. Next, remove the two screws from the side of the lighter. Next, the ivory-colored grip plates come off. Once the grip plates have been removed, gently pry the two metal halves of the lighter apart. Finally, an exploded view of the internals, and some details about what they do and how they go together:

The first set of questions is intensely personal. “Can a heart implanted micro robot operate permanently? “Can cell phones and tiny robots implanted in the heart operate permanently without having their batteries charged? These provocative questions highlight a web page from KAIST, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, which focuses on the Institute’s work with piezoelectric devices.

Apple shows continued interest in haptic touchscreen fingertip feedback. By Neil Hughes Future iPhones and iPads from Apple could feature advanced technology that would allow users to not only touch the screen, but also feel textures and other feedback on their fingertips.

Apple shows continued interest in haptic touchscreen fingertip feedback

Apple has shown interest over the years in making touchscreens more immersive and responsive to users with haptic feedback. In March, it was even suggested that Apple had been in contact with a company called Senseg, which sells technology that uses electric fields to simulate complex, context-sensitive textures on a touchscreen device. A newly published patent application from Apple, and discovered by AppleInsider, aims to offer the same ability to make a touchscreen feel smooth, rough or otherwise, but through different methods. The proposed invention, entitled "Methods and Systems for Providing Haptic Control," features a tiered haptic system that would be formed by stacking haptic elements.

The latest proposed haptic feedback invention from Apple, published this week by the U.S. Apple Mulls Over Haptic Touch Displays in Future Devices; Patent Filing Reveals. If Samsung’s favorite pastime is to file new trademark and brand name applications with the authorities, rival Apple is crazy about filing patent applications.

Apple Mulls Over Haptic Touch Displays in Future Devices; Patent Filing Reveals

Looks like there is no dearth of new ideas with Apple’s intellectual pool, going by the rate at which the iGiant is filing patent applications. The latest one in the series of patent filings by Apple shows the possibility of the company using haptic technology on iOS touch devices. Haptic technology is special since it makes the present touch experience on touch screen devices different, with its ability to make users feel buttons on a touch screen. The technology makes it possible by providing local feedback to the user when he or she touches on a touch surface. Apple filed a patent application in late March which showed that the company plans to use piezoelectric actuators with the touch displays to provide the touch feel. Analyzing energy potential. Sensors, radio transmitters and GPS modules all feature low power consumption.

Analyzing energy potential

All it takes is a few milliwatts to run them. Energy from the environment - from sources such as light or vibrations - may be enough to meet these requirements. A new measurement device can determine whether or not the energy potential is high enough. The freight train races through the landscape at high speed, the train cars clattering along the tracks. World’s first piezoelectric MEMS oscillators operate up to 625MHz ±50 ppm. May 10, 2012 // Julien Happich Integrated Device Technology has announced what the company claims to be the world's first crystal free piezoelectric MEMS (pMEMS) LVDS / LVPECL oscillators for high-performance communications, consumer, cloud, and industrial applications.

The new oscillators operate with substantially less than one picosecond of phase jitter in compact industry-standard packaging, making them an ideal replacement for traditional six-pin crystal oscillators (XOs). The IDT 4M series high-performance LVDS / LVPECL oscillators leverage IDT’s patented CrystalFree pMEMS resonator technology, enabling IDT to rapidly factory-program the desired output frequency without the need to fine-tune expensive crystals. In addition, because the nominal resonator frequency of pMEMS is much higher than quartz crystal, 4M oscillators are able to achieve higher frequencies at lower cost without sacrificing critical performance.

Harvesting energy from natural processes, such as heat and vibration, is not new (think windmills). But ever since 1880, when French physicist brothers Pierre and Jacques Curie discovered the piezoelectric effect, others found a variety of materials that could generate small amounts of electricity when stressed.
