Buy, Borrow, Bypass: Diary Comics

Check out more from them here. I’m nosy by nature. I love to peek inside someone else’s mind and see how they think and what their life is like. Sometimes it’s a learning experience, and sometimes I discover someone is more similar to me than I’d thought, and I feel less alone. Because they haven’t yet made a real version of the key from Locke and Key that lets you open someone’s mind and poke around (or, you know, an ethical way to use it), I read diaries for a deep look at a character or person. Everywhere Antennas by Julie Delporte: Our anonymous narrator has chronic, debilitating headaches, and as she starts to suspect they’re caused by a sensitivity to radiation from the electronics all around us, she becomes more and more uncomfortable in our modern world.

Oy Gevalt!: 32 Books for Jewish Book Month

Each year, in the month before Chanukah, and thanks to the efforts of a public librarian in 20th century Boston, American Jews are given an opening to celebrate Jewish books. This year, Book Riot (or: me. I am. This list includes some of my perennial favorites.) is reading along with its own list of Jewish titles. These thirty-two books include novels, biographies, a children’s book, textual criticism, works on Israel and the diaspora, and scholarship for Shabbat reading.

November 6th: Jews and Words, Fania Oz-Salzberger and Amos Oz. Wiccan Fiction for Everyday Witches. Though I still own a wood chest full of tarot cards, runes, herbs, and bits of DNA from people who have crossed me (kidding…), I haven’t practiced since that day in my dorm room where I crushed wet marigolds on my eyes and didn’t see fairies.

But I still have the tattoo, the amusing memories, and this list of books to remind me of my foray into Wicca. While the following reads aren’t all explicitly about contemporary Pagan Wicca, these are books I either picked up or would have been interested in because of their Wiccan themes. The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare Let’s start with a classic, and one that pops up on every list of witchy recs. How can you help but befriend the Quaker witch when you’re a Barbados girl transplanted to bleak Connecticut among people who think you’re strange, and maybe even dangerous, for being yourself? Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman When I first got into Wicca it was with my best friend. The top 10 novels about lost friendships. Ian, one of the protagonists of my novel In Real Life, is just as useless a friend as I always seem to end up being.

Depressed, unemployed and attempting to avoid the internet, he carries around a large brown envelope, stuffed full of unanswered letters from his friend Andrew in Japan, intending to reply just “as soon as something good happens” to him. And in the meantime, he merely transports these letters from rented room to rented room, re-reading them for comfort, in exactly the same way I might carry around and re-read any one of the following 10 novels, instead of catching up with my own neglected friendships. 1. Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? By Lorrie Moore Berie and Sils meet first as teenagers in the 70s. 2. This posthumously published novel-autobiographical-notebook-thing defies straightforward categorisation, but it is gentle, bittersweet, bleakly humorous, and very moving. 3. Amazon. 5 Irreverent Self-Help Books. Having recently become a self-help author in my own right (and been dubbed an “anti-guru”), I thought it would be fun to explore some other titles in the category that promote the same kind of sass and sauciness of my book, The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck, while simultaneously helping people become their best selves.

5 Graphic Memoirs to Pick Up Immediately

Check out more from them here. I always say that graphic memoirs are what got me into comics. I’d been reading and loving them for years before I started reading any types of series; they’re my first love. I stopped reading them for awhile—not on purpose, but because I had a lot of other “work” reading to do, and I stopped prioritizing them. But one day, I just looked at all the awesome graphic memoirs on my shelves desperate to be read, and I knew that it was time for a binge. By the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Olive Kitteridge. From Pulitzer Prize-winning Strout (The Burgess Boys, 2013, etc.), a short, stark novel about the ways we break and maintain the bonds of family. Check out more from them here. The comic book scene right now is full of incredible writers and artists. It’s also full of writers and artists that pull double duty, writing and drawing their own books or writing one and drawing another. These creators are tearing through the comic market, publishing amazing books and paving the way for other writer/artists to get their own work seen.

Our great big round-up of the Best Books of the Year is full of books we’ve been championing all year (so you’ve probably heard of them).

Now, let’s talk about some excellent reads of 2015 that flew under the radar and didn’t get the attention or buzz we think they deserved: Act of God by Jill Ciment. This was one of the first 2015 titles I read, and it’s stuck with me. Featuring an interleaving cast of characters faced with a slow-growing but catastrophic fungus outbreak in New York City, Ciment’s novel is both pretty odd and oddly moving. West with the Night. 6 Small Press Books to Read in November. I honestly have no idea how I’m going to narrow this down to a reasonable amount of books. See You Next Tuesday by Jane Mai (Koyama Press, 10 November 2015) 1) I immediately clicked this because of the title (I mean, come on). 2) While doing research, I went to Jane Mai’s website and found the BEST GIFS EVER. 3) I followed her on Twitter and read how she has been using pennies to pay for bus fare specifically because they told her that she couldn’t do that and she’s my favorite forever now.

A book that radically changes our understanding of North America before and after the arrival of Europeans. Encounters at the Heart of the World concerns the Mandan Indians, iconic Plains people whose teeming, busy towns on the upper Missouri River were for centuries at the center of the North American universe.

We know of them mostly because Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1804-1805 with them, but why don't we know more? Who were they really? In this extraordinary book, Elizabeth A. Fenn retrieves their history by piecing together important new discoveries in archaeology, anthropology, geology, climatology, epidemiology, and nutritional science. By 1500, more than twelve thousand Mandans were established on the northern Plains, and their commercial prowess, agricultural skills, and reputation for hospitality became famous. Elizabeth A. Boy, Snow, Bird - Picador. Helen Oyeyemi BOY Novak turns twenty and decides to try for a brand-new life. Flax Hill, Massachusetts, isn’t exactly a welcoming town, but it does have the virtue of being the last stop on the bus route she took from New York. Flax Hill is also the hometown of Arturo Whitman – craftsman, widower, and father of Snow. SNOW is mild-mannered, radiant and deeply cherished – exactly the sort of little girl Boy never was, and Boy is utterly beguiled by her. If Snow displays a certain inscrutability at times, that’s simply a characteristic she shares with her father, harmless until Boy gives birth to Snow’s sister, Bird. When BIRD is born Boy is forced to re-evaluate the image Arturo’s family have presented to her, and Boy, Snow and Bird are broken apart. Sparkling with wit and vibrancy, Boy, Snow, Bird is a deeply moving novel about three women and the strange connection between them. The Magician’s Land.
