Sometimes it’s a learning experience, and sometimes I discover someone is more similar to me than I’d thought, and I feel less alone. Because they haven’t yet made a real version of the key from Locke and Key that lets you open someone’s mind and poke around (or, you know, an ethical way to use it), I read diaries for a deep look at a character or person. Everywhere Antennas by Julie Delporte: Our anonymous narrator has chronic, debilitating headaches, and as she starts to suspect they’re caused by a sensitivity to radiation from the electronics all around us, she becomes more and more uncomfortable in our modern world.

Each year, in the month before Chanukah, and thanks to the efforts of a public librarian in 20th century Boston, American Jews are given an opening to celebrate Jewish books. This year, Book Riot (or: me. I am. This list includes some of my perennial favorites.) is reading along with its own list of Jewish titles. These thirty-two books include novels, biographies, a children’s book, textual criticism, works on Israel and the diaspora, and scholarship for Shabbat reading.
November 6th: Jews and Words, Fania Oz-Salzberger and Amos Oz. Wiccan Fiction for Everyday Witches. Though I still own a wood chest full of tarot cards, runes, herbs, and bits of DNA from people who have crossed me (kidding…), I haven’t practiced since that day in my dorm room where I crushed wet marigolds on my eyes and didn’t see fairies.
But I still have the tattoo, the amusing memories, and this list of books to remind me of my foray into Wicca. While the following reads aren’t all explicitly about contemporary Pagan Wicca, these are books I either picked up or would have been interested in because of their Wiccan themes. This was one of the first 2015 titles I read, and it’s stuck with me. Featuring an interleaving cast of characters faced with a slow-growing but catastrophic fungus outbreak in New York City, Ciment’s novel is both pretty odd and oddly moving. I have found fifty books minimum that I want in my hands right now. 1. See You Next Tuesday by Jane Mai (Koyama Press, 10 November 2015) 1) I immediately clicked this because of the title (I mean, come on). 2) While doing research, I went to Jane Mai’s website and found the BEST GIFS EVER. 3) I followed her on Twitter and read how she has been using pennies to pay for bus fare specifically because they told her that she couldn’t do that and she’s my favorite forever now.
