Centripetal Democracy - Joseph Lacey. Centripetal democracy is the idea that legitimate democratic institutions set in motion forms of citizen practice and representative behaviour that serve as powerful drivers of political identity formation.

Centripetal Democracy - Joseph Lacey

Partisan modes of political representation in the context of multifaceted electoral and direct democratic voting opportunities are emphasised on this model. There is, however, a strain of thought predominant in political theory that doubts the democratic capacities of political systems constituted by multiple public spheres. This view is referred to as the lingua franca thesis on sustainable democratic systems (LFT). Inadequate democratic institutions and acute demands to divide the political system (through devolution or secession), are predicted by this thesis. Mobility, Migration and Transport - Historical

Mobility theorists sketch how our lives are constantly remade by the intertwined movements of bodies, things and information circulating at geographical scales from the local to the global. In this incisive book Colin Pooley questions whether this is really anything new. By forging connections between the scholarly fields of migration, mobility and transport history he brilliantly demonstrates that more links us to than separates us from human movement in the past.

Pooley thus challenges historians and mobility scholars alike to re-think their research. The social and ecological dilemmas of contemporary mobility can only be understood in a historical context; writing that history requires closer attention to how everyday and residential travel were entangled with each other and the transport systems that made them possible. Migrant Integration Between Homeland and Host. This book provides a theoretical framing to analyse and examine the interaction between origin and destination in the migrant integration process.

Coverage offers a set of concrete conceptual tools, which can be operationalised when measuring integration. This title is the first of two complementary volumes, each of which is designed to stand alone and provide a different approach to the topic. Here, the chapters offer a detailed look at integration across eight key areas: labour, education, language and culture, civic and political participation, housing, social ties, religion, and access to citizenship.

Readers are presented with an examination into the globally available knowledge on interactions between emigration/diaspora policies on one hand and integration policies on the other. Migrants actively belong to two places: the land they left behind and the home they are seeking to build. These impacts are not only ecological, but also social, economic and legal. Among the most significant of such impacts is climate change-induced migration. The implications of this on human rights raise pressing questions, which require serious scholarly reflection. Migrant, Refugee, Smuggler, Saviour. ‘The authors leap around, with vivid reporting from Niger, Libya, the Balkans, Turkey and Egypt, among other places … The book’s key contention—that tighter rules inspire entrepreneurs to create new, more dangerous and criminal smuggling routes—is persuasive.’ — The Economist ‘Migrant, Refugee, Smuggler, Saviour argues that the world needs to understand how networks of traffickers function if it is to get to grips with this migration crisis.

The Contentious Politics of Refugee and Migrant Protest and Solidarity Movements: Remaking Citizenship from the Margins (Hardback) About the Book Over the past two years, large-scale migratory movements to Europe have gained worldwide attention, and have prompted ever-greater desires to govern and control them.

The Contentious Politics of Refugee and Migrant Protest and Solidarity Movements: Remaking Citizenship from the Margins (Hardback)

At the same time, we have seen the emergence of political struggles for rights to movement and demands for greater social justice, in both the global ‘north’ and ‘south’. Throughout the world, political mobilizations by refugees, irregularized migrants and solidarity activists have emerged, demanding and enacting the right to move and to stay, struggling for citizenship and human rights, and protesting the violence and deadliness of contemporary border regimes. This collection brings together articles that explore political mobilizations in several countries and (border) regions, including Brazil, Mexico, the United States, Austria, Germany, Greece and Turkey and ‘the Mediterranean’.

Fortress Europe? - Challenges and Failures of. An unprecedented number of people is currently on the move seeking refuge in Europe. Large parts of European societies respond with anxiety and mistrust to the influx of people. Nationalist, anti-migrant parties from Slovakia over Germany to the UK have gained increasing support among the electorate and challenge the political mainstream. Europe is struggling how to respond. While the search for solutions is ongoing one pattern seems to be emerging: Fortress Europe is in the making. Hochkonjunktur, «Überfremdung» und Föderalismus. Les limites du volontarisme « Et je veux… » Vouloir sans savoir ? Black Rights/White Wrongs - Paperback - Charles W. Mills. Liberalism is the political philosophy of equal persons - yet liberalism has denied equality to those it saw as sub-persons. Liberalism is the creed of fairness - yet liberalism has been complicit with European imperialism and African slavery. Liberalism is the classic ideology of Enlightenment and political transparency - yet liberalism has cast a dark veil over its actual racist past and present.

In sum, liberalism's promise of equal rights has historically been denied to blacks and other people of color. In Black Rights/White Wrongs: The Critique of Racial Liberalism, political philosopher Charles Mills challenges mainstream accounts that ignore this history and its current legacy in self-conceivedly liberal polities today. Mills argues that rather than bracket as an anomaly the role of racism in the development of liberal theory, we should see it as shaping that theory in fundamental ways. L'analyse des données quantitatives - Eric Fong , Brent Berry - Immigration and the City. Description The majority of immigrants settle in cities when they arrive, and few can deny the dynamic influence migration has on cities.

However, a "one-size-fits-all" approach cannot describe the activities and settlement patterns of immigrants in contemporary cities. The homes and communities where immigrants live and the jobs and businesses where immigrants earn their living have become increasingly diversified. Migration - Flucht - Integration Kritische Politikbegleitung von der ‚Gastarbeiterfrage’ bis zur ‚Flüchtlingskrise’ International Migration Law - Vincent Chetail. International Migration Law provides a detailed and comprehensive overview of the international legal framework applicable to the movement of persons. The role of international law in this field is complex, and often ambiguous: there is no single source for the international law governing migration. The current framework is scattered throughout a wide array of rules belonging to numerous branches of international law, including refugee law, human rights law, humanitarian law, labour law, trade law, maritime and air law, criminal law, and consular and diplomatic law.

This textbook therefore cuts through this complexity by clearly demonstrating what the current international law is, and assessing how it operates. The book offers a unique and comprehensive overview of this growing field of international law.
