Swirl: Learn R, in R. Your Students Should Be Coding (Five Sites to Get Them Started) Creative Commons Licensed Image Source “More important than the utilitarian function of filling job vacancies, though, is the pedagogical value inherent in coding.” “21st century learning” – it’s one of the hottest terms in education. The elements range from student-centered learning and accountability to technology and real-world application. Chief among the tenets is that students must be prepared for the collaborative, technology-rich workforce.

But some of these skills can be tough to come by. Survey information suggests that nine out of 10 U.S. schools do not teach computer programming. This is especially alarming considering the growth of the field – estimates indicate nearly 1.4 million jobs will open over the next decade with only 400,000 graduates prepared to fill them. More than the utilitarian function of filling job vacancies, though, is the pedagogical value inherent in coding. Online coding tutorials also often employ the touted aspects of game-based learning.

Teach Coding in the Classroom: Resources from ISTE '14. I was super excited to attend Hack Education (originally called “EdubloggerCon”), an all-day unconference held the Friday before the formal start of ISTE 2014. This interactive day of learning, now in its eighth year, was touted to me as the event to attend in Atlanta, and it did not disappoint. The informal, small-group conversations were inclusive and welcoming. The "rule of two feet" meant that if you needed to move, you were encouraged. And session topics were diverse -- on the schedule were discussions about maker education, augmented reality, design thinking, game-based learning, coding in the classroom, digital storytelling, and many, many more! In an attempt to heed Dave Guymon’s call to share the ISTE learning (see his blog post on Getting Smart, "Don’t Leave Your Learning Behind: What To Do Now That #ISTE2014 Is Over"), here are some resources discussed by a group of elementary and secondary educators during a morning session on coding in the classroom.

Some Final Notes. Pixel Press Floors - Pixel Press | Draw your own video game. > Pixel Press Floors app – You’ll need an iPad to “Create-from-Paper” and play – and you can create directly in the app just like you would on paper using touch or a stylus with our “Draw-In-App” tools. > Paper, Pencil & our Sketch Guide (optional) – Print the free Sketch Guide at home (visit projectpixelpress.com to download the PDF) and take a picture of what you create with your iPad’s camera.

The glyphs you draw (for example an “x” is a spike and a “+” is a coin) are transformed into gameplay objects. From there you can apply a design to the element, test it, and play it. It’s that simple, and once you learn the glyphs, you’ll be creating like a pro. Parallax is when things look to be at a different position when viewed along different sightlines.

It’s one of the biggest trends in 2013, gaining immense popularity after Apple announced iOS 7 with parallax backgrounds. Now, the trend continues with iOS 8 and Mac OS X Yosemite. This concept is also popular in web design, which is slightly different but holds the same principle. Parallax scrolling is a really cool way to set your website apart from the regular design that your competition is probably using. This special scrolling technique in web design creates an illusion of depth wherein background images move by the camera slower than foreground images. Websites with parallax scrolling often use HTML5, CSS, jQuery, and native JavaScript code to create thisamazing scrolling effect. A lot of people are now searching for parallax themes, especially when their websites or blogs are powered by WordPress. Enjoy! Move Wisten Trades Altus Story Quintet Willow Grecko Zoo Creative.
