Cardboard Cutout Sundown Wednesday, 26 January 2011 Karel Teissig This recent article by Rick Poynor prompted me to order a book that I'd had my eye on for a while, Marta Sylvestrová's Czech Film Posters of the 20th Century.

It arrived in the post today, and I think it's the largest book I now own - if there are no further posts on Cardboard Cutout Sundown, it may be that my girlfriend has used it to try and knock some sense into me.Some of my favourites in the book are by Karel Teissig (1925-2000), and you can see many more of his designs at Terry Posters, who specialise in Czech film posters. There are also several examples of his book covers and illustrations (below). Also at Terry Posters: Bohumil Štěpán, who's one of my favourite finds at A Journey Round My Skull. Animation. Think Infographics are New? At London's Transport Museum, They Date Back to the 1920s. © London Transport Museum Infographics have become controversial and TreeHugger has been having a field day discussing the pro's and con's. However, in the "nothing new under the sun" department, it turns out that they have been around as far back as the 1920s. London's estimable Transport Museum is having an exhibition of vintage posters from that time, and look what's popped up... The small display of 20 posters is entitled Painting by Numbers and shows artistic, historical versions of data visualisation (as it used to be called).

Most of the posters in the display date back to the 1930s or earlier and were designed to promote the benefits of travelling by London transport. The number of people using the system, even in 1923, is staggering: 1.134 M people, and a staff of 25,000. The London Transport Museum is a treasure trove of vintage posters about transport. TreeHugger Lloyd has commented on the negatives of the infographic.
