Americans' love affair with motorhomes. Recreational vehicles: Freedom to roam the open road - but in comfort It was the Germans who invented the motor car and steered us all towards the boundless possibilities and endless problems of the age of internal combustion. But it took the genius of America to recognise that with a little extra hammering and spannering the motor car could readily be converted into the motor home. I am told it was a matter of days - weeks at most - before someone had converted the first horseless buggy into the first recreational vehicle (RV). It was a clumsy-looking behemoth whose passengers rode - very slowly - high above the road surface on what was essentially a four-wheeled roof garden, complete with balcony. But practicality was not the point. The point was Americans had brought their restless love of the open road and their romantic affinity for far horizons into the motor age.

In Britain you need a professional licence to drive such a vehicle. Bank loans It is a simple enough idea. Busy again. Ferrari 599 FXX 2010 Detroit Auto Show Pictures on Yahoo! Autos. Lamborghini Ankonian.

By Chris Isidore, senior writerFebruary 24, 2010: 4:52 PM ET NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors' deal to sell its Hummer brand to a Chinese automaker fell through Wednesday and the company said it now plans to shut down the brand. GM did not give any details about why the agreement to sell Hummer to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co. Ltd. could not be completed, saying only that it was disappointed it was unable to close the deal. The large SUV brand is based on the Humvee military vehicle.

It was always a niche vehicle but its image and sales were hit particularly hard by rising gasoline prices earlier this decade. Last year, GM only sold 9,046 Hummers, down 67% from 2008. Hummer is the third brand that GM is being forced to shut down as part of its bankruptcy reorganization last year. Chinese automakers have shown interest in buying established western brands as companies there strive to become more global players.

By Peter Valdes-Dapena, senior writerDecember 19, 2009: 12:00 PM ET NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors is shutting down its Swedish car brand, Saab, after attempts to close a deal with a buyer failed. GM had announced earlier this year that it was close to reaching a deal with Swedish super-carmaker Koenigsegg. That deal fell, though. "In the end, Koenigsegg discovered some issues they didn't think could be overcome in a timely fashion," said John Smith, GM vice president of corporate planning and alliances. Dutch exotic carmaker Spyker then emerged as a bidder for Saab, but that deal couldn't be concluded in time, GM said.

In both cases, according to GM, issues arose during negotiations that prevented a final sale. "Like everybody, we would have preferred a different outcome," Smith said. GM said it still intends to sell some Saab 9-3 and 9-5 technologies to the Chinese automaker Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings Co. GM's remaining brands are Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. I know three people who own Priuses. One does not know what kind of mileage she gets, despite the dashboard mileage gauge, and she refuses to fill it up a couple of times and write down the odometer readings because "it's too complicated" and she doesn't want to "do all that math.

" Sheesh. Another says he gets 50 MPG in real use, but I'm kind of doubtful that he's ever checked it by the fillup-vs. The third is a Jalop-type who obsessively logs every mileage datum (along with weather conditions!) But why would it matter? However. I wonder, do they account for aero drag in the EPA test suite, or do they do the whole thing indoors on a dynamometer? @wkiernan: The EPA numbers for the VW clean diesels came out *VERY* bad the first time through. Hyundai dealer auctions Genesis Coupe for $16k, doesn't want to. File this one under the dangers of mixing traditional Brick & Mortar business practices with the immediacy and transparency of the internet.

Glenn Hyundai of Lexington, Kentucky placed a slightly used Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T on eBay Motors. There was no reserve, and a gencoupe.com forum member named McFly made a bid of $16,125 and won the auction (here's a PDF of the auction in case the eBay link goes dead). Not a bad price, especially as the Gen Coupe in question had less than 5,000 miles on it and costs over $22,000 when new. McFly then secures financing from his bank to pay for the Coupe, makes the necessary travel arrangements to go pick up his car (he doesn't live in Kentucky) and calls the dealer to put down a deposit with his credit card. This is when things begin to go bad.

I talk to the front desk secretary, ask her how to make my deposit for an Internet Sales deal I have, and she immediately transfers me to Eric Manley. Make the jump for the rest. Ooof... If you're thinking of buying a 2010 Ford Mustang, stop now and go back to waiting. If you already bought one... sorry. While the 2011 Mustang isn't exactly a new car -- it's just an improvement to the car you can buy now -- but the improvements are major.

Most significant is the new 5.0-liter V8 engine unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. It's going to replace the 4.6-liter engine in today's car. The new engine is significantly more powerful, producing 412 horsepower compared to 315 from the 4.6-liter engine, while fuel economy is one mpg better. The base Mustang's V6 engine, which was unveiled in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show, is a lot better, too. Of course there's more to performance than just the engine.

Gasoline prices have experienced an uptick recently but will continue to edge up slightly as summer approaches, industry experts said. Prices at gas pumps across the country are averaging $3.60 a gallon as temperatures rose slightly in some regions. Gasbuddy.com found that gas reached $3.60 a gallon in many states. Marked exceptions on the low-end were Montana, where gasoline prices were $3.27 a gallon, and Texas, where gas was $3.47 a gallon.

By contrast, California had gas as high as $4.17 in California, and Hawaii hit $4.28 a gallon. Regular gasoline retail prices will continue to stay within this range and is projected to reach an average of $3.57 per gallon overall during the period of April through September, the Energy Information Administration said.
