Kriegsspiel. Introduction to Kriegsspiel "Where did wargaming start? " is a question periodically asked by wargamers. There are many potential answers, ranging from John Clerk's naval wargame of 1700, to the abstract Chinese games, such as 'Go' or Chinese Chess, but the Prussian Kriegsspiel perhaps has one of the stronger cases. In 1811, Two young Prussian Princes, Fredrick and William, learnt of a wargame invented by Herr von Reisswitz who was living in Berlin. They were in intrigued by the idea and soon Reisswitz was given a room in the palace to build a large plaster contoured model of countryside at the arbitrary scale of 26 inches to the mile. The troops were represented by wooden blocks with coloured paper stuck on them. The development of the game was then led by Von Reisswitz's son, who turned the rules for the game into something resembling a simulation of war.

In 1824, Reisswitz gave a lecture on the game to the general staff, followed by a demonstration. The history of British Kriegsspiel. The Case for Cold War Gaming in the Military Services. Air University Review, July-August 1967 Lieutenant Colonel Arthur W. Banister The armed services have long employed various forms of “war gaming” in analyzing the military problems that confront them. In fact, this particular type of analysis has been regarded as almost exclusively a military province, at least until after World War II. The political game The foundation for much of the present cold war gaming activity in the military service lies in the political game developed by the RAND Corporation in the mid-fifties and later refined at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Service school activities Certain military service schools have adopted the political game or variations there-of for teaching and training purposes. Of the service academies, both the Military Academy at West Point and the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs have experimented with political games.

At the Air Force Academy political gaming has fared somewhat better. Joint War Games Agency References 1. 2.

Serious Games (Ressource bibliographique) America's Army. Eduscol : caractéristiques des jeux sérieux.
